Ancient Stagira near Olympiada, Halkidiki Greece: The town of Olympiada, named after King Alexander's mother, is mostly famous due to the historically significant ancient site of Stagira. Located on the north-eastern side of Halkidiki, it lies only 95 kilometers from Thessaloniki. Believed to be the birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle as well, the ancient site of Stagira is embedded deep in history.
Excavations at this site started in 1990, and a lot of artifacts were retrieved from here and are kept in a special exhibition area in Olympiada. In 655 BC, Ionians from Andros founded this town. The brought to light many Paleolithic tools, bones and fossilized animals that have been extinct thousands of years ago. Findings are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Polygiros.

#halkidiki is very interesting peninsula in northern #greece that offers many beaches, clear sea, beautiful views and sunsets. It is located not far from Thessaloniki but you definitely will need a car if you want to explore the area. It really worth a visit because it is a bit different than other beach places in Greece because of the landscape.

Nestled in the northern part of Greece, Halkidiki is often overshadowed by more famous Greek destinations, yet it offers an enchanting escape with its pristine beauty and rich cultural heritage. This peninsula, with its three distinctive prongs—Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos—boasts a blend of crystal-clear waters, lush landscapes, and historic charm.
Kassandra, the westernmost prong, is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and sandy beaches. It’s a perfect spot for those seeking both relaxation and entertainment. The town of Kallithea, with its lively atmosphere and numerous dining options, provides a delightful mix of modern comforts and traditional Greek charm.
Sithonia, the central prong, offers a more serene experience. It’s characterized by its untouched landscapes, secluded beaches, and charming villages. Here, you can explore the picturesque town of Nikiti or enjoy the tranquility of secluded coves like Kalamitsi and Trani Ammouda. Sithonia is ideal for nature lovers and those seeking a quieter retreat away from the bustling crowds.
Mount Athos, the eastern prong, is a unique destination, renowned for its monastic community and spiritual significance. While it’s a restricted area for male visitors only, the surrounding region offers stunning views and a glimpse into the area’s rich history.
Halkidiki is also a treasure trove of archaeological sites. The ancient city of Olynthus and the ruins of the old city of Stageira, the birthplace of Aristotle, offer fascinating insights into Greece’s ancient past.
Whether you're exploring the sandy beaches of Kassandra, the natural beauty of Sithonia, or the spiritual heritage of Mount Athos, Halkidiki promises an unforgettable Greek experience. Its diverse offerings cater to all tastes, making it a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.#halkidiki
Athitos Kassandra 🇬🇷
#myhiddengems
Just spent a wonderful weekend in Afitos (also spelled Athitos), Kassandra, and I’m still buzzing from how incredible it was! 🌅 This charming village in Halkidiki is the perfect blend of old-world charm and stunning natural beauty. The best part? It’s free to stroll through the cobblestone streets lined with traditional stone houses, cozy cafes, and shops selling local crafts. Every corner felt like a postcard! 📸
We started our days with a dip in the crystal-clear waters at Afitos Beach—no entrance fee, just pure relaxation under the Greek sun. 🌊 The views from the cliffside above the beach were absolutely breathtaking. We also visited the Church of St. Demetrius, a beautiful 19th-century church in the village center. Just a short drive away is the lively town of Kalithea, which offers more shopping and a buzzing nightlife if you're in the mood for something more energetic.
For dinner, we tried a seaside taverna, and the fresh seafood, especially the grilled octopus, was out of this world! 🐙 Don’t miss the local wine either—it’s delicious. If you’re into history, the Folklore Museum in Afitos offers a glimpse into the region’s past. Afitos is the perfect getaway if you're looking for a mix of culture, relaxation, and great food. I can't wait to go back! #trip #Afitos #Halkidiki #GreekVillage #BeachLife #TravelGreece
