As early as the National Day of 2022 when I drove to Yunnan, I planned to drive around Yunnan on the newly built Deqin Road, but at that time the road construction time on the announcement board was extended, so I didn't make it. After the new National Highway 214 was built, this old national highway was downgraded to Provincial Highway 236, from an altitude of over 3000 to 4292 meters, you can enjoy the Baima Snow Mountain, the cascading roads and grassland vegetation at close range, and you can see the Meili Snow Mountain in front when the weather is good. The drive to Baima Snow Mountain Pass is the highest road section in Yunnan, and it is also the border between Deqin and Shangri-La. 🛣️Deqin Road｜Difficult and beautiful The construction of Deqin Road started at the end of 2009. As dusk approached, the setting sun painted the snow-capped mountains in hues of red and gold, weaving a mesmerizing "Song of Ice and Fire" on the snowy landscape. When twilight faded and moonlight cascaded down, the entire mountain returned to its tranquil, pure white, with only the sound of the wind resonating with my heartbeat. II. Exploring the Hidden Wonderland: The Intertwining of Nature and Culture The core area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" in Northwest Yunnan, where Peacock Mountain is located, is a treasure trove of both natural beauty and cultural heritage. Driving along the Degong Highway, which took 16 years to build, offers breathtaking views of the Nujiang, Lancang, and Jinsha Rivers in a single day. The rime along the highway was crystal clear, the meadows were covered with a thin layer of snow, yaks strolled leisurely, and the primeval forests and cascading waterfalls added to the wild charm. In the Nujiang Grand Canyon at the foot of the mountain, villages of the Lisu and Nu ethnic groups dotted the landscape. By the fire pit in Laomudeng Village, villagers warmly welcomed me with "xiala" (homemade wine). The a cappella four-part harmony of the Lisu people echoed in the cold night, and the ancient "Dabia" played, narrating the stories of their people. Staying overnight in Baihualing Lisu Music Town, while simmering tea by the fire, a villager offered me a piece of aged Nuodeng ham. 6 Days in Nujiang - From a Foggy Place to a Windy Place The weather in February is unpredictable, so I changed my itinerary from A to B. The starting and ending points remain the same, and I'm satisfied! In February, the blue-green Nujiang River is rare, with red kapok, peach blossoms, pear blossoms, rapeseed flowers, snow, and clouds. It's amazing! I recorded both the original plan and the temporary adjustment. Itinerary Plan A Starting from Dali, head north along the Nujiang River, then south along the Lancang River, and visit Wuli Village, Peacock Mountain, and Tongle Village, before finally returning to a windy place! D1 Arrive in Dali - Laomudeng D2 Laomudeng - Bingzhongluo D3 Wuli Village - Qiuna Tong D4 Qiuna Tong - Peacock Mountain - Cizhong - Tacheng D5 Tacheng - Shaxi D6 Shaxi - Return to Dali Plan B I went north along the Nujiang River, but it snowed near Bingzhongluo, and the roads to Dulongjiang, Peacock Mountain, and Bingzhacha were closed, so I had to return along the Nujiang River. The weather in Nujiang is very different on sunny and rainy days, and I experienced both. D1 Dali - Lushui - Laomudeng, stay at Laomudeng Shangri-La Homestay. Arrive in Dali at 11:00 and head straight to the Xianfeng Bookstore, passing Jingzao Hall and Tiger Leaping Gorge along the way, and arrive at the homestay after 20:00. 🏨 It's very ordinary, but it's okay for one night. But it's at the highest point and has a large viewing platform facing the crown top. The morning view with clouds and mist is also worth seeing. D2 Laomudeng - Zhiziluo - Shiyueliang - Bingzhongluo, stay at Jixiashan Wuli Camp. Depart at 8:30 and visit Zhiziluo and Laomudeng first, passing Shiyueliang, but unfortunately, it was foggy and rainy, so I didn't see it. Arrive in Bingzhongluo around 15:00, and pass the First Bend of the Nujiang River and Zhanatong before entering. There are two viewing platforms on the mountain that are worth visiting, with a much better view than the check-in point along G214! Then go to Puhua Temple and Chongding Church, and check in at Wuli Camp after 16:00. 🏨 See another article. There is a section of road construction and traffic control before entering Bingzhongluo. Turn right at the road closure point and cross the bridge to take an old road. The road is unpaved and narrow, so be careful when driving. D3 Wuli Village - Lushui, stay at Nujiang Hilton Garden Hotel In the morning, I hiked and rested in Wuli Village in the rain. As the rain and snow got heavier and the surrounding road conditions worsened, I decided to return to Liuku at noon. There were already many falling rocks on the road, and I didn't return to the hotel until 20:00. 🏨 The facilities are okay, but the soundproofing is poor, so be careful if you mind. D4 Lushui - Dali - Shaxi, stay at Shaxi Mili Homestay Depart at 9:00. The driver took the national highway and then took the old road over the mountain to Shaxi in the afternoon, arriving at 15:00. It happened to be Friday, so be sure to go to the market! It's very interesting! D5 Shaxi, stay at the same place. The materials in Shaxi can be written in a separate article. D6 Shaxi - Return to Dali Fortunately, I rented a car for the Nujiang trip! The driver is a local from Nujiang, very familiar with Nujiang and the road conditions, and provides good service with a comfortable car at a reasonable price! The road on G214 is good, but many check-in points have narrow and steep roads, with many continuous uphill and downhill sections, especially when it rains and snows. It's not recommended to drive if you're not confident in your driving skills. I missed the Lancang River trip, maybe next time!

The ancient road was carved into the cliffs, less than 1 meter wide and about 2 meters high, winding above the Nujiang River. It was carved by the ancients using the natural terrain, following the mountain, and was a huge project. It is hard to imagine that during the six-month rainy season, there is a risk of house collapse everywhere. The rain is heavy, making it difficult to walk, and a road must be opened between the stones. The ancient road where Wuli Village is located is not only an important road for the village to the outside world, but also a necessary road from Yunnan to Chayu County in Tibet. On this road, the horse caravan transported Sichuan and Yunnan tea to Qinghai and Tibet, and brought back good horses from Qinghai and Tibet. Qiunatong Catholic Church is located in Qiunatong Village, Bingzhongluo Town, in the most prominent position in the village. You can see it as soon as you enter the village via the mountain road. This church is a local landmark. From the outside, it looks more like a temple, with a brown and yellow exterior and gray tiles. A four-cornered pavilion is built on the double-eave roof, and a cross stands on the ridge. The cross can be seen from most angles in the village. Qiunatong Catholic Church has a long history. In 1841, a French missionary built a church here after crossing the Biluo Snow Mountain, but it was burned down a year later due to the "Bengka Incident." In 1888, Father Ren Anshou came to the Nujiang Grand Canyon. After the Baihanluo Incident in 1905, Father Ren Anshou used the compensation from the Qing government to build a new church in Qiunatong Village, which was completed in 1908. It became the northernmost point of Catholicism in the Nujiang River Basin. Villagers from here and Deqin on the other side of the mountain often come to the church to participate in activities. It is the main center of faith in the area and is well maintained.

"Qiunatong" is a Nu ethnic word meaning "black water dam." Qiunatong is located in a valley. The nearby stream appears dark due to the light and shadow effects, and the terrain is relatively open, hence the name. The village is mainly composed of Nu-style wooden houses built along the mountain, with wooden carvings on the eaves. On sunny days, villagers graze sheep on the hillside and grow corn and wheat in the fields next to their houses. The northern end of the Nujiang Grand Canyon is the border of Tibet. Today, the village's tourism industry is booming. There is a guesthouse called Abai, which serves delicious food. If you are driving, you can contact the owner in advance. Qiunatong is located in the valley of Biluo Snow Mountain. A small road behind the village leads to the other side of Meili Snow Mountain after a four-hour hike, offering a different view from Feilai Temple or Wunongding in Deqin. Few people know about this route, so you need a guide from the village. The village is preparing to build a viewing platform and level the road. In two or three years, it will become a popular hiking spot.

KOLON's choice of location is interesting. Bingzhongluo in Gongshan County is the starting point of the Bingzhongluo-Chamdo route into Tibet, so many off-road self-driving teams pass by to replenish supplies. Wuli Village is across the Nujiang River from this KOLON store. Sitting by the warm and bright window, you can clearly see the whole village on the opposite side. In the morning, you can see the morning mist, and in the evening, you can see the smoke from the kitchen chimneys. Black truffles are produced in the mountains near Bingzhongluo. The scientific name of the black truffle here is Tuber indicum, which usually grows in soft soil and matures in winter. It has a strong aroma and firm flesh. The best time to pick black truffles is from the beginning of winter to March of the following year. During this period, the truffles are mature, with a stronger aroma and firmer flesh. From March to October every year is the truffle picking ban period in Bingzhongluo. The protection work is very strict. Kolon and Jixia Mountain have joined hands to create this "ultimate destination store" at the entrance of Wuli Village. It is definitely a plus for backpackers and self-driving enthusiasts traveling through this land.

On the way, we saw a rare horse suspension bridge. Walking on the suspension bridge, we could see the majestic Gaoligong Mountain, the magical and charming Biluo Snow Mountain, and the smoke rising from the depths of the white clouds. The villages were looming like a fairyland. Isn't this heaven on earth? Continuing on the way, we saw a huge hole formed by the erosion of marble. From a distance, the stone cave with blue sky and white clouds looked like a bright moon hanging high in the mountains and forests, which was integrated with the world and never fell day and night. It is known as the holy land of the Three Rivers and the root of the Lisu people, the "Stone Moon" of the Nujiang River; and the ferry of the expeditionary army returning home.

The Nu people mainly make a living from agriculture, growing crops such as corn and buckwheat. Their traditional houses come in a variety of forms, with log cabins being the most common. They also collect stones from the mountains, process them into sheets, and cover the roofs with them. The layers of stones resemble fish scales. According to the most recent census, the Nu population is less than 37,000, with most of them living in Lushui, Fugong, and Gongshan counties in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. Wuli Village, which we are introducing today, is a typical Nu village located north of Bingzhongluo. The village roads are straight or curved according to the terrain, and the houses are built on different levels of the terrain. Most of the houses are Nu-style stilted log cabins made of wood, bluestone, bamboo, and other materials. The village is filled with smoke from cooking fires, and the men farm while the women weave, creating a scene reminiscent of the Peach Blossom Land. To the north of the village is a 1.5-kilometer section of the Ancient Tea Horse Road carved into the cliffs, which is the only passage to the outside world and a testament to the village's history. There are two ways to visit Wuli Village. If you are short on time, you can view the village from a distance at the viewing platform on National Highway 219, where you can see a panoramic view of Wuli Village. In the morning and evening, you can capture the scene of smoke and mist coexisting. There is a Kolon outdoor store next to the viewing platform, where you can buy a cup of coffee and sit in the scenic area along the river for an afternoon. The store also has an introduction to truffle picking and a nice environment. You can also enter the village from the south via a suspension bridge and walk south along the stone road and boardwalk to the Ancient Tea Horse Road, which is 3 kilometers long. You can get up close to the villagers' wooden houses, farmland, streams, and vegetation. On the Ancient Tea Horse Road, you can look back at the majestic Shimen Pass, with the rushing Nujiang River flowing at your feet. The 3-kilometer walk takes about 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace.
