2025 Gaoping Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)

The explosive popularity of "Black Myth: Wukong" has sparked my strong interest in touring Gaoping's ancient architecture. Following the official map, let's start the ancient architecture tour. The following route is based on my personal experience, for the reference of interested friends! Mishan Iron Buddha Temple: One of the filming locations for "Black Myth: Wukong," it is world-famous for the twenty-four heavenly beings surrounding the Buddha hall, made of wood frame, clay core, and iron wire sculptures, unparalleled worldwide. Mishan Dinglin Temple: According to the cultural relics protection staff, the grotto came first, followed by the temple. The grotto dates back to the Northern Wei Dynasty, while most existing buildings are from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Highlights include the mountain gate’s double-eaved, hip-and-gable style two-story pavilion and the lotus caisson ceiling on the second floor. Chengqu Kaihua Temple: I have a special note about this temple from before. The architecture and murals are the highlights. Additionally, the cultural relics protection staff was very enthusiastic, giving us a detailed demonstration of photo spots inside the temple and overlooked small scenes—thumbs up! The photo spots are: first, shooting the Mahavira Hall through the mountain gate archway; second, photographing the glazed roof ridge in front of the protection office; third, shooting the flying eaves of the mountain gate from the office steps—all stunning. Jiandu Temple in Jiannan: The mountain gate dates to the Ming Dynasty, the Jiandu Hall to the Yuan Dynasty, with murals inside from both Yuan and Ming Dynasties. Highlights include the adorable mountain gate and the Yuan Dynasty architecture and murals. Youxian Temple: The existing Pilu Hall is the original structure from the Song Dynasty, and the Three Buddha Hall is a Jin Dynasty relic. Highlights include the mountain gate, Pilu Hall, and Three Buddha Hall architecture. Chongming Temple: The central Buddha Hall inside the temple is a Northern Song wooden structure, combining Tang and Song styles. The hall features a unique broken bracket structure, the only one of its kind in the country, a distinctive ancient innovation of using small parts for great effect. Guzhong Temple, also known as the Yan Emperor Temple: Highlights include the Crown Prince Hall, a Yuan Dynasty relic also called the No-Bracket Hall, featuring a covered caisson ceiling with exquisite and unique structure. Wangbao Village Erlang Temple: The Jin Dynasty opera stage here is the earliest in China, with an inscription dating to the 23rd year of the Jin Dading era on the base. The offering hall and main hall are from the Ming Dynasty. Bofang Xianweng Temple: The main hall enshrines Zhang Guolao, with a very special I-shaped overall structure. The Xianweng Hall contains the precious mural "Tang Xuanzong’s Mount Tai Fengshan Ceremony." Bofang Village is also a traditional ancient village, highly recommended.

It's been a while since I last visited Baili Gallery. After all, a round trip is 200~300 kilometers, this distance is enough to leave Beijing. But recently, it’s been raining constantly in Beijing and the surrounding areas. I couldn’t go to Zhangbei Grassland or Weixian either. Finally, on a weekend, I didn’t want to stay home and get moldy, so I braved it and went to Yanqing to stroll around Baili Gallery. This area is already considered the outer suburbs and requires a full day. The route is shown in picture 1. Pictures 2~18 were taken yesterday. It was partly cloudy and cool, but not very photogenic. Baili Landscape Gallery One-Day Tour Guide Besides the pictures, I’ll add a few points: 1. Overview first The black line is the round-trip route, over 100 kilometers one way. The blue line is the Baili Gallery self-driving route, over 40 kilometers in total. The green area is the Baili Gallery region. 2. Time arrangement The round trip takes about 2 hours one way. You can spend about 3~4 hours playing inside Baili Gallery. 3. Round-trip routes There are 3 routes: A, B, and C. Route A is more complex, with many bends and more cars. Cangmi ancient road is narrow and sharp-turning, but fortunately has fewer cars. Ansi Road has many motorcyclists running the mountain. Both roads are very suitable for self-driving. You can stop and go along the way, but pay attention to safety. So it’s recommended to take this route in the morning when you’re in good condition. Route B is for when you’re tired of playing and want to return early. This route starts from the visitor center. Liu Gan Road is 21 kilometers long and also a sharp-turn mountain road. Route C is the complete route through Baili Gallery. It mainly includes more views of Baihebao Reservoir. There is a Yanshan Tianchi viewing platform nearby, but the trees are too dense to see anything. Routes B and C both converge onto Changchi Road, passing Yongning Town, Dazhuangke Township, and the Ming Tombs. There are many cyclists on the Dazhuangke section. 4. Playing in Baili Gallery The whole route is not long, barely 50 kilometers, hence the name Baili (Hundred Li). It’s all in the canyon, and the scenic road doesn’t require mountain crossing. But the main traffic to and from is on mountain roads. It’s much more regulated now. You can no longer park casually by the roadside; barriers have been installed. Previously, people parked anywhere and camped in the woods. So: ① It’s harder to stop anytime on the main road for photos or camping. Usually, side roads are okay, for example, the section from 5 to 7. Luan-Chi New Road is the main road and not easy to park on. But the southern Luan-Chi Old Road, passing through Xiushui Bay, allows parking anytime and has fewer cars. I saw quite a few people hiking here. ② In picture 1, the green background marks 3 entrances and exits. The blue background marks relatively well-known landmarks and attractions in Baili Gallery. You don’t have to pay to enter several paid attractions. Also, Chaoyang Temple and Wulong Gorge are not open yet. The petrified wood is not much to see. ③ Henan Flower Sea is quite nice. Different flowers bloom in different seasons. Yesterday I saw a large patch of small yellow flowers. ④ Some official parking lots have been built along the road. At the visitor center, petrified wood, and several scenic spots, parking costs ¥2/15 minutes. There are often free spots nearby, but you have to walk a bit. ⑤ There are many farmhouses by the roadside, so no worries about food and lodging. Also, Yongning Town and Qianjiadian both have gas stations. For self-driving and mountain running, this route plus the big round trip connecting Yanqing, Huairou, and Changping is a very worthwhile loop to drive. PS. Today I’m at Miaofeng Mountain, Mentougou.

On the way from Dinglin Temple to the hotel, I suddenly saw a building with yellow glazed tile roofs faintly flashing on the distant mountain. Checking the map, it showed the Daliang Mountain Ancient Battlefield, so I decided to visit. It was already evening, with a cold wind blowing. Looking up, I saw extremely steep steps. Taking a deep breath, I climbed steadily without stopping. When I reached the platform, I saw a huge statue of the famous Zhao general Lian Po. Although old, Lian Po still loved food. Unfortunately, due to a petty remark, "three arrows were lost in a moment," he lost the chance to serve Zhao. In the end, with a heart willing to serve the country but nowhere to offer his service, he died in melancholy. Behind the statue, a poem praising Lian Po was carved: "Fortify the walls and gather the elite, face danger with seasoned courage. Bees swarm the state of Mi, tigers watch Wuan City. One meal still strengthens the heart, a thousand gold already spent. Shouchun thinks of Zhao’s soldiers, tears flow down the white beard." At the time, I didn’t catch the author clearly, but later searching on Doubao, I found it was by the Qing dynasty poet Zhang Chenglun. However, there are differences in the third and fourth lines; Doubao’s version reads, "Bees swarm the land of Sanjin, tigers watch Wanshan City." I’m not sure which is the original. Further up is the Xuan Yun Temple under renovation. Outside the mountain wall of the hall, there were many paint and varnish buckets. The doors, windows, and eaves pillars of the hall were bright and colorful, and the Buddha statues inside were also full of spirit.

Gaoping Iron Buddha Temple is like a recluse hidden away in an unassuming farmyard. Though small in scale, it houses the most astonishing masterpieces of ancient Shanxi painted sculptures, breaking the traditional serenity of sculptural expressions with a touch of boldness and exuberance, as if the Twenty-Four Devas are about to burst through their clay shells and descend to the mortal world. The temple's 27 surviving statues follow the layout of the Twenty-Four Devas, with the Four Heavenly Kings positioned at the four corners. The core sculpting technique—"using iron as bones and shaping with iron"—supports the clay bodies, allowing the statues to maintain their original posture and charm despite centuries of weathering. What makes the Iron Buddha Temple renowned and unparalleled are the Twenty-Four Deva statues on the gable walls. Along the junction of the front and rear walls and the gables, concave altars are built like a stage, carrying these artistic spirits. The altars are about one meter high, each adorned with twelve Deva statues, totaling twenty-four. They stand in orderly rows, as if awaiting a grand performance. Each statue is about three meters tall, with robust and upright postures resembling ancient warriors, exuding a sense of power. Their exaggerated and vivid facial expressions—every wrinkle and gaze—seem to contain endless stories, vividly portraying the emotions of the celestial beings, whether angry, smiling, or contemplative. The most striking and unique feature is their distinctive "explosive hairstyle." The meticulously crafted beards, ribbons, and crowns, made of iron wire, are unparalleled among ancient painted sculptures in Shanxi and even nationwide. 💧 Highlights: 1️⃣ Architectural Style: The main hall was built in the Jin Dynasty and renovated in the Ming Dynasty, featuring exquisite glazed components and a ridge ornament inscribed with "Shakyamuni Treasure Hall." 2️⃣ Twenty-Four Deva Painted Sculptures 3️⃣ Two Golden Pillars Inside the Hall: Richly decorated, worth a close look. The Ancient Zhong Temple faces south with its back to the north, divided into upper and lower courtyards. Along the central axis are the mountain gate, the No-Beam Hall, and the main hall, with wing rooms and side halls on both sides. Outside the mountain gate, there are four-room eastern and western opera stages. On the west side of the mountain gate, there is a brick-arched side entrance with the inscription "Yandi Zhong Temple," which was originally the entrance to the temple. The No-Beam Hall, also known as the Crown Prince Hall, is the main building of the Ancient Zhong Temple. It is a single-bay square structure with a xieshan (hip-and-gable) roof, five-tier bracket sets with downward cantilevers, round wooden columns, and large architraves. The roof has nine ridges and is covered with ordinary barrel tiles laid in an upward-facing pattern.

The grottoes face south with their backs to the north. Currently, 6 caves remain, with caves 1, 2, and 3 from the west being Buddhist caves featuring Northern Dynasty grotto statue styles. They all have rectangular floor plans with inverted-bowl shaped ceilings decorated with painted lotus flower patterns. The cave entrances are rectangular with flame-shaped lintels, and two guardian figures carved on both sides of the doors. Inside Cave No. 3, low platforms are set on all four sides, with niches for Buddha statues carved into the north, east, and west walls. Each niche contains one Buddha with two attendants. The outer walls of the three niches are fully carved with thousands of Buddha images, and the names of donors are inscribed on both sides of the door on the south wall. About 60 meters to the east, there are 3 more stone caves. Two of them were carved in the 32nd year of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1604), with inscriptions reading "Three Teachings Cave," "Three Virtues Cave," and "High Cave." The clay sculptures inside these caves have been completely destroyed. Currently, 3 stone tablets recording the creation of these three caves still remain.

The Iron Buddha Temple, which became popular because of Black Myth: Wukong🔥, has finally reopened. Some say it is the most mysterious national treasure in Shanxi. Of course, as the Iron Buddha Temple becomes more and more well-known, there are more and more people, but the temple is very small and has limited reception capacity, so it is recommended not to queue up during holidays‼️ 📕I visited the Iron Buddha Temple on a working day, and there were not many people. It is hidden in a very inconspicuous corner through a small alley. 📕The first impression upon entering the temple is that it is very small. The small courtyard is about dozens of square meters. The main hall contains twenty-four heavenly Buddha statues, which can only accommodate a few people at the same time. 📕However, the architecture of the Iron Buddha Temple itself is also a major attraction! The main hall was built in the Jin Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. It has three bays in width and six rafters in depth, with a gable roof and exquisite glazed components. A glance upwards reveals a shocking wooden structure. 😭😭😭—————— Among the statues in the hall, the one that impressed me the most was the Sakyamuni Buddha statue in the center. Upon closer inspection, I realized that its face was disfigured, and there was an extra hole in its forehead (presumably the gem in the center of its brow was pried away). The Buddha statue next to it was headless, and many small statues in the hall were also headless, which would make anyone who saw them feel distressed. It is said that in the 1990s, when the excavation of cultural relics was rampant, the statues of the Iron Buddha Temple were repeatedly attacked and stolen several times. The heads of six statues and some of the small statues with backlight and the Buddha statues for worship were stolen. Viewing tips‼️ ‼️Many people have reported that they have to queue up to visit the Iron Buddha Temple. After queuing for an hour, they can only see it for a few minutes👀. The Iron Buddha Temple is really very, very small, so please don’t complain. ‼️Avoid going on working days. When there are fewer people, there will be no time limit, and you can visit at will. ‼️The daily limit is 500 people, so remember to make a reservation in advance.

It was a trip to Jincheng 🌸 We started our day at Danhe Park, a peaceful urban park where cherry blossoms bloom along the riverbanks. The combination of pink petals, calm waters, and traditional-style bridges makes for breathtaking photos 📸 We explored different parts of the park and found the best spots near the pavilions, where the blossoms 🌸 perfectly framed the landscape. The best time to visit is early in the morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) when the light is soft, and the crowd is minimal ✨ 📍Danhe Road, Cheng District, Jincheng, Shanxi, China We then headed to Huangcheng Xiangfu, an ancient mansion with a stunning cherry blossom 🌸 trail. Walking through the historic courtyards with pink petals gently falling in the breeze was like stepping into a painting 🎨 We recommend visiting between 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM to enjoy the soft morning light ✨ which highlights the contrast between the delicate cherry blossoms and the grand architecture. 📍Yangcheng County, Jincheng, Shanxi, China We also explored Manghe Scenic Area, a nature reserve with cherry blossoms blooming 🌸 along the riverbanks and mountain paths. The reflection of the blossoms on the water made for some of our favorite photos of the day. These passionate and evocative lyrics vividly depict the unique charm of Jincheng, making me eager to embrace this city. In March, filled with anticipation, I embarked on a journey to Jincheng.
