We returned to Erguna from Shi Wei village via a different route. This time, we followed the road alongside the Erguna river, constantly looking out onto Russian plains. The scenery is glorious here and the weather was perfect to be able to see as far as the hills allows it. Stopping in Qika for lunch at a traditional ethnic Russian home where we picked our own vegetables for the table, we savored the traditional and simple architecture of the buildings. The food was delicious and the tea inviting, the conversation unparalleled. The grasslands are a place for complete zen. Shi Wei village has been voted one of the top ten villages in China and you can see why. 😍 Shi Wei lies next to the Erguna river which separates China and Russia. It is quaint and charming and the locals are extremely hospitable. During the day you can walk through the village or rent a bike to move around faster. We went to see the Erguna Wetlands, the largest wetlands in Asia, which was a nice walk. While visiting Inner Mongolia, you have the chance to experience China’s biggest wetland area in Erguna. It is also, like pretty much everything else in China, the first known wetland in Asia. This area is a National Park and has great infrastructure all the way around. At the entry and exit point, you will find yourself surrounded by little gift and snack shops, but they are a bit more pricey since it’s a tourist area. With a large and well built boardwalk, you can go from one side to the other, and also go down the hill a bit into the wetlands. However, you cannot actually reach any parts of the river. From the top, the contrasting view between the city and vast green landscape makes for great pictures, and complement the scenery in a beautiful way. At the end of the boardwalk, you will find a small museum which displays the multiple flora and fauna found in the wetlands. Some parts are interactive, so it’ll be a great break for the kids! However, part of the road is under construction, and there is a stretch of about 20 kilometers of rural road with poor conditions, full of potholes, making the drive quite bumpy. Crossing the grasslands, it was my first time driving on the prairie, and I felt very excited. Following the paths used by local herders and driving along the tire tracks, despite the rough road conditions, my mood was exceptionally good. The endless rolling grasslands stretched out before my eyes, and I could stop the car at any time to walk among the freely roaming cattle, sheep, and horses, feeling the sense of freedom and unrestrained nature. Honestly, at that moment, there was no need to do anything else—just looking at the scenery was already exhilarating. In the afternoon, I arrived at Ergun National Wetland Park. After experiencing the gorgeous autumn scenery on the Genbai Highway, we thought the autumn in Kaxian could be any more stunning, but we were stunned just ten minutes after leaving Shiwei. The scenery here combines the grandeur of the grassland, the loveliness of the curled grass, the splendor of the birch forest, the splendor of the wetlands, the winding of the Ergun River, and the mystery of the border, which is directly sublimated! When we were near Liuka Road, we saw a rut that could lead us up the small hill next to it. The driver turned on the off-road mode and drove to the top of the mountain, where we took the photo of our lives. We took a lot of photos along the way, and when we were approaching Wulan Mountain, we met a group of lambs grazing on the hillside. They performed the migration of hundreds of millions of sheep for us, which was so cute. We arrived at Wulan Mountain near sunset and paid 80 yuan for admission to the scenic area. Due to the weather, we didn't see the sunset. The wind on the top of the mountain was very strong and cold. The view from the Ergun River was not as good as the view from the Morigele River the day before. You can choose according to your own situation. After dark, drive from Ka Line to Enhe. The road condition is good, but be careful that there may be cows and horses blocking the road. Just follow behind and pass slowly. The locals reminded us not to honk the horn at will. Enhe stayed in a single-family wooden cabin. Although it was a bit cold without heating, it was very unique.

Day 3: Erguna - Birch Forest - Enhe Russian Ethnic Village Explore the birch forest where sunlight creates beautiful patterns through branches. Play shadow games with kids and take Nordic-style family photos. Later, visit Enhe, stay in a log cabin, experience Russian culture, and make Russian bread. Accommodation: Enhe Flower Bud's Home, independent villa wooden house with yard, cozy and comfortable. Day 4: Enhe - Heishankou Drive along the border defense road enjoying scenic views. At Heishankou, kids can dress in Mongolian clothes, ride horses across the grassland, visit herder families, and experience milking cows and feeding lambs. Watch stunning sunset and join bonfire party in the evening. Accommodation: Heishankou Xiju Hotel, scenic stargazing yurt where you can see stars from bed, with alpaca toys and electric tractors for kids. Day 5: Heishankou - 186 Colorful River - Manzhouli Experience exciting grass sliding at 186 Colorful River. Then head to Manzhouli to visit the National Gate and Matryoshka Doll Park, like stepping into a fairy tale. Enjoy Manzhouli's brilliant night views. Accommodation: Manzhouli Eurasia Hotel, fun children's themed suite with two rooms and three beds, tents, building blocks, close to China-Russia Trade Street. Day 6: Manzhouli - Return Arrange activities based on departure time. Consider visiting Lake Hulun, the pearl of the grassland, before heading home. 🍜 Food Recommendations 🥘 Hot Pot Mutton: Fresh-cut mutton with sesame paste and chive flowers, try it at the popular Flavor Hot Pot City in Hailar. 🍖 Grilled Lamb Chops: Crispy outside, juicy inside, incredibly fragrant. 🥩 Hand-Grabbed Mutton: Authentic Mongolian dish, enjoy the pleasure of eating meat with hands. 🍽️ Russian Cuisine: Borscht, Russian bread, canned beef, tiramisu - try authentic Russian food at Ruble Western Restaurant in Manzhouli. 🥛 Dairy Products: Milk skin, milk tofu, milk tea - rich in milk flavor, nutritious and delicious.

Day 1: Arrive in Hailar 🏨 Hilton Garden Inn The hotel is not bad, and the breakfast is the best we've had in the past few days. There is a supermarket downstairs, remember to buy some snacks. Day 2: Depart for Ergun 🏨 Dabaihua Hotel The scenery on the road today is the best. There are horses, sheep, and cattle everywhere, as well as marmots. (Originally booked Wanting Deep Breathing, but it was fully booked. That one would have been better. The Dabaihua Hotel family room we chose has 2 rooms and 3 beds, so it's quite spacious.) There is a Xiangmanyuan Restaurant near the hotel, which is good and inexpensive. It has the best value for money on this trip, highly recommended. Day 3: Pass through the Birch Forest and feed the reindeer 🏨 Enhe Hawoer Enhe is a Russian town with a popular "lose your mind" bar. You can make big bread and Matryoshka dolls here, which is perfect for children. In the evening, you can ride a horse through the grassland to watch the sunset, which is quite comfortable. The view from the top of the mountain is excellent, but your butt will hurt after riding a horse for a long time. Enhe is full of wooden houses, and Hawoer is said to be the best hotel in Enhe, but it's just average, and the soundproofing is very poor. I don't know if all the hotels in Enhe are like this. Day 4: Check in to Heishantou 🏨 Grassland Here Yurt Remember to choose Area A 1- for the yurt, the view is good and there are no obstructions. The Grassland Here Hotel has grass sliding and a small train. There are also herdsmen experiences around, such as wearing ethnic costumes and milking cows. The kids loved these. Day 5: 🏨 Barag Tribe Wangye Mansion This yurt is large, with upstairs and downstairs. But I think the scenery is better at Heishantou. There are also folk customs experiences here. Children like to feed the sheep and participate in the lamb race. The horse dance performance here is quite famous, so you can go and see it. Day 6: Manzhouli 🏨 Matryoshka Hotel Remember to stay in the main building of the Matryoshka Hotel, otherwise the environment will not be good. There is also a Matryoshka Amusement Park next to it, with a grand circus. For food, I recommend the North Xinjiang Pearl Revolving Restaurant and Lubuli. The revolving restaurant offers views of the national gate and overlooks 3 countries, but the taste is average and not as good as Lubuli. The prices of the 2 restaurants are similar. Day 7: 🏨 Hulun Nur Remember to choose the Muhu room. We didn't book it, so we chose the Blue Lake room, which was super small and couldn't even fit our luggage. Day 8: Hailar Airport ✈️ 🌟 Food: We ate Northeastern cuisine and mutton every day, except for 2 Russian meals in Manzhouli. The food is not cheap, but the portions are quite large. 🌟 Accommodation: Basically no bad experiences. It's just that the hotel breakfasts, except for the first day at the Hilton, were very limited. 🌟 Activities: Except for Manzhouli, which is a city, the rest are grassland views, which are all similar. You can visit fewer places.
