On August 10th, I visited Erguna Wetland National Park and rode an electric car along the forest path, which felt like riding in a Totoro bus tunnel. Walking along the park trails, flanked by lush trees, I felt like enjoying a forest bath, a truly relaxing experience. From either side of the ostrich park, you can ascend the mountain to enjoy the panoramic views. The left path is steeper, while the right path is longer and passes through a birch forest. Once you reach the summit, you'll be treated to some of Asia's most beautiful wetland scenery on one side and a vast expanse of grasslands and mountains on the other. It evokes the poetic sentiments of "stars hanging low over the vast plains" and "contemplating the vastness of heaven and earth."

Shiwei, located in Erguna City, Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a border crossing between China and Russia. We didn't enter the Shiwei village, but instead drove directly to the border crossing. The National Defense Border Area is regulated, requiring a ¥20 entrance fee and a ¥5 sightseeing bus, making it the cheapest international trip ever. However, due to our social status, we didn't dare venture out, so we just took a few photos. We saw many other tourists snapping photos here and there before leaving. #ErgunaCity #ShiweiPort

Linjiang Village is located in Erguna City, Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The "jiang" in Linjiang refers to the Erguna River, the upper reaches of the Heilongjiang River, marking the border between China and Russia. The entire village has only about a hundred households, and walking along the village streets, you'll occasionally spot faces of Russian descent. Shortly after arriving in Linjiang Village, we asked the innkeeper how to get up the hillside to watch the sunset. He said to turn left and follow the path next to the Linjiang Inn up the hill. After a while, we finally saw the sunset. The setting sun cast a faint yellow hue over Linjiang Village, while the Erguna River continued its gentle flow in the distance. After sunset, we returned along the same route and happened to see Maria Bakery. We bought a loaf of bread to try. Loaf is a staple of Russian food, typically fermented for a long time before being baked, unlike the soft bread commonly found in Taiwan. #ErgunaRiver #LinjiangVillage

Location: Erguna National Wetland Park, Hulunbuir City Admission: ¥60 Shuttle Bus: ¥15 Erguna National Wetland Park, located at the northwest foot of the Greater Khingan Range, covers 12,072 hectares. The Genhe River, like a jade belt, winds through the park. The park boasts a diverse range of wetland types, including riverine wetlands, herbaceous swamps, forest swamps, shrub swamps, and marshy meadows, supporting a diverse range of wildlife and plants. It is also a crucial habitat for numerous nationally endangered birds and animals. (From the official park introduction) You can purchase your ticket at the scenic area ticket office; no reservations are required. Upon entering the scenic area, you'll directly board an electric car. The driver is incredibly skilled! The car rides on a narrow wooden plank road, but it feels like a roller coaster, especially around corners, where you can barely brake and glide through them! The drive took about 10 to 20 minutes. Upon arrival at the drop-off point, you can walk to the park's "Most Beautiful Wetland Park in Asia"—a large rock formation. After crossing the bridge, you'll experience a forest-like scenery, spotting plants and animals like squirrels along the way. Further along, you'll pass a deer park (we didn't go in) and cross another bridge to an ostrich farm, where you can buy food to feed the birds. Both trails lead uphill from the ostrich farm, so choose whichever you choose. At the top, you'll see a vast wetland and a large rock bearing the inscription "Asia's Most Beautiful Wetland." The view from the summit is stunning and perfect for photo opportunities. The entire journey takes about two to three hours. I had heard that the quality of yurts in Heishantou varies greatly, so before my trip, I compared several options, checked prices, and read reviews from previous guests. In the end, I chose to stay at the Jiali Tourist Ranch yurt and opted for the stargazing tent version, which comes with a skylight! Although I have plenty of camping experience, this was my first time staying in a Mongolian yurt. The yurt at Jiali Tourist Ranch was quite luxurious (as seen in the photos), featuring two large beds that could accommodate a family of four. However, my travel companion and I each had a bed to ourselves, enjoying the entire yurt. The skylight can be opened with a remote control, making it convenient for stargazing at night, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offer a view of the outside scenery. The room is also equipped with air conditioning. The ranch also offers another type of yurt without a skylight, but I specifically wanted the deluxe version for a more indulgent experience—an occasional treat for myself!

We returned to Erguna from Shi Wei village via a different route. This time, we followed the road alongside the Erguna river, constantly looking out onto Russian plains. Shi Wei village has been voted one of the top ten villages in China and you can see why. 😍 Shi Wei lies next to the Erguna river which separates China and Russia. It is quaint and charming and the locals are extremely hospitable. During the day you can walk through the village or rent a bike to move around faster. There is a small port at the end of the board walk where you can get a boat to go up and down the river. 🚢 You can also visit the raspberry and blueberry farm and check out the reindeers there. 🫐 Visit in the evening to find the village hopping with bbqs and tours it’s taking in the sights. #shiwei #china #russia #grasslands #localtravel #summervacation #naturalwonders

The grasslands between Hailar and Erguna and beautiful and as far as the eye can see. 🚗 135kms Arriving in Erguna you find many stores selling Russian products and Russian, Chinese and Mongolian writing on store fronts.🪆🇨🇳🇲🇳 Russian architecture is clearly the order of the day in Erguna. We went to see the Erguna Wetlands, the largest wetlands in Asia, which was a nice walk. While visiting Inner Mongolia, you have the chance to experience China’s biggest wetland area in Erguna. It is also, like pretty much everything else in China, the first known wetland in Asia. This area is a National Park and has great infrastructure all the way around. At the entry and exit point, you will find yourself surrounded by little gift and snack shops, but they are a bit more pricey since it’s a tourist area. With a large and well built boardwalk, you can go from one side to the other, and also go down the hill a bit into the wetlands. However, you cannot actually reach any parts of the river. From the top, the contrasting view between the city and vast green landscape makes for great pictures, and complement the scenery in a beautiful way. At the end of the boardwalk, you will find a small museum which displays the multiple flora and fauna found in the wetlands. Some parts are interactive, so it’ll be a great break for the kids!
