This business trip brought me to Dongfang City, Hainan Province, a city on the west coast of Hainan with a low profile, named Dongfang.
Before coming, I heard that the sunset at Fish Scale Island is one of the three best sunset viewing spots in Hainan, so I chose to stay at Seagull Bay.
It's a 10-minute taxi ride from here to the Fish Scale Island Lighthouse, and there are also buses available, but they stop running at 6pm, so you'll need to take a taxi back after watching the sunset.

I have previously introduced how to visit Sanya and the niche treasure Lingshui, but in fact these two places are in the southern part of Hainan. This time I will share about the secluded and fun place in the west of Hainan Island, close to the Beibu Gulf: Dongfang.

Hainan's Little Guilin is no longer a secret
More and more people are likely to learn about this place, but I'm actually quite reluctant to see that happen. Starting from the reservoir, there's an informal guard who doesn't charge a fee but requires registration. We don't know which department the information is given to after registering.
This place is no longer deserted; there's even a restaurant opened nearby, thankfully not too many. There are portable toilets, which is an improvement over the past as there's water available for flushing and handwashing.
Last time we came, it was almost just the two of us. This time, there are locals (or perhaps not locals) who have set up simple sunshades on the lawn, and you can sit down as long as you buy their coconuts.
I saw the flocks of sheep and cows again. The sheep were herded too quickly, and I couldn't capture a close-up, only a distant view. The cows were grazing right beside us, and among the herd, three cows had bells hanging from their necks, creating a pleasant jingle as they moved. I love this feeling! But the cows urinating was quite a sight, a big puddle that was rather startling.
With more people, there are now boats, and the fishing environment has deteriorated significantly. In the past, we would fish in the afternoon, which was when the big fish ate the small fish, and we could catch big ones. This time, after changing spots several times, we ended up catching 6 small fish, which we took to the restaurant to be cooked.
I just hope people will protect the local ecology and remember to clean up their own trash before leaving.
The charming Oriental Little Guilin
The Oriental Little Guilin is located in Dongfang City, Hainan Province. The mountains here are not as delicate and handsome as those in Guilin, Guangxi, but they are filled with a sense of mystery and solidity. The mountains lean on the water, and the water encircles the mountains, creating beautiful reflections that cut out exquisite pictures. As the boat moves on the water surface, it feels as if you are traveling within a landscape painting. The gentle ripples and the slight shaking of the reflections make one feel relaxed and happy, enjoying the leisurely atmosphere.
This scenic area is not as bustling as others; it can be said that there are almost no other water amusement projects, only boat tours are offered. The boats are small, seating about 20 people, and the boat fare is not expensive, 30 yuan per person. On the day we went, we happened to meet a group of fellow Xinjiang people who were on a self-driving tour. It's a fortunate encounter to meet acquaintances in a foreign land. We shared a boat with them (there were only five of us, and the boat rental was 50 yuan per person) and toured the Little Guilin landscape for about 30 yuan per person. It was truly beautiful . The tour took about 50 minutes, which was very cost-effective. If you have the chance, you must go and see it.

The E Niang Cave on the mountain is located halfway up the mountain northeast of the main peak. It is unfathomably deep and the road inside the cave is winding. This cave has three stone halls that can accommodate tens of thousands of people. There are whirlpools of flowing water below the stone halls. Therefore, a glass floor was used in the design. Through the glass, you can see the flowing water below. The overall design and lighting arrangement were very careful. Below the stone hall, the water vortexed and surged, hitting the cave cliff and making a roaring sound that made people's hair stand on end. This well not only has a history of a thousand years but also carries a legendary story. It is said that the well was originally square and later expanded into a round shape, built with bricks. Near the well, there used to be a Subduing Bo Temple, but it has been destroyed. A stone tablet is embedded in the wall, inscribed with "The Well of Han Horse Subduing Bo", dated "Qianlong Xinsi".
In 1961, Guo Moruo inspected this well in Hainan and confirmed that it was indeed built by General Ma Yuan of the Han Dynasty during his passage through Hainan, which dates back more than 1950 years. After tasting the well water, he praised it endlessly and composed a poem in its honor.
