A Glimpse of Zhuhai - Doumen Old Street

In the urban context of Zhuhai, Doumen Old Street is like a cherished old book, quietly telling stories of the past. Also known as Doumen Old Street, it is located in Doumen Town, Doumen District, Zhuhai City, and is an important part of the Doumen Old Street Historical and Cultural District. This street starts from Fengliu Bridge in the north and extends to Minzhu Street in the south, with a total length of about 1 kilometer and a width of 7.5 meters. It is a pedestrian street throughout, where one can feel a leisurely pace while walking. Doumen Old Street is famous for its well-preserved arcade buildings from the Republic of China period and its rich historical and cultural heritage. It is also the only relatively well-preserved arcade street in Zhuhai City. Its history can be traced back to the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1552 - 1566), when it had already formed a market. By the eleventh year of the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1733), the street gradually prospered and became a regional commercial center, indicating its level of prosperity. With the passage of time, Doumen Old Street has continuously rejuvenated. In 2012, the facades and windows of the buildings along the street were repaired; after 2020, buildings that did not conform to the historical style were restored or had their facades redesigned; in 2022 and 2024, the first and second phases of upgrade projects were launched respectively, greatly enhancing its cultural value and tourist appeal. The architecture of Doumen Old Street is very distinctive, integrating various Western architectural styles such as Baroque, Ancient Roman, and Renaissance, while retaining the characteristics of traditional Lingnan arcades. The arcades on both sides of the street are tall, with European-style exteriors, and at the same time, there are numerous shops, showcasing a unique charm of East-West fusion. Moreover, it is a historical and cultural street in Zhuhai City, and in 2013, it was selected as a "Famous Historical and Cultural Street in China," becoming a shining cultural card of Zhuhai.
