Penglai is the abbreviation for Penglai District, which belongs to Yantai City, Shandong Province, located in the northeastern part of Shandong Province, north of Yantai City. Penglai District is situated at the northern tip of the Jiaodong Peninsula, bordering the Yellow and Bohai Seas, with a total area of 1014.6 square kilometers. More than 2100 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han looked out to the sea here and saw Mount Penglai, hence he built a city and named it after the mountain. It was the starting point of the ancient maritime Silk Road. In the eighth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (634 AD), Penglai Town was established; in the third year of the Shenlong era (707 AD), the town was promoted to a county. In June 2020, Penglai City and Changdao County were abolished, and Penglai District of Yantai City was established. Penglai, formerly known as Dengzhou, has always been called 'a fairyland on earth'.
