Shuyuanmen~ Finding ancient elegance in the bustling city

Located in Beilin District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, Shuyuanmen is an old street hidden in the hustle and bustle of the city. It is filled with the fragrance of books because of the Guanzhong Academy situated within it. Shops on both sides of the street sell paper, ink, brushes, and inkstones, while craftsmen gather here to paint, write, and carve seals on the spot. In addition to these, there are also shadow puppets, gourds, and Tang Dynasty lady figurines among other Shaanxi characteristic handicrafts. Young ladies dressed in Hanfu shake their freshly painted round fans, as if they have traveled back to an ancient marketplace. The 'Shuyuanmen' that Xi'an locals usually refer to is a pedestrian street that stretches from Beilin to the entrance of Guanzhong Academy. The name of Shuyuanmen originates from the Guanzhong Academy located within it. Shuyuanmen is situated on the east side within the South Gate (Yongning Gate) of Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, extending east to Anju Alley and connecting to Sanxue Street. In 1991, the street was renovated to preserve the Ming and Qing architectural styles and was established as a cultural tourism street.
