The first stop of the German Romantic Road self-driving tour: Würzburg on the Main River

A 1.5-hour drive from Frankfurt will take you to Würzburg, Germany’s famous city of culture, art, wine and romance. It is located on the Main River in Bavaria. It is the castle at the intersection of the German Castle Road and the Romantic Road, and is the starting point of the Romantic Road. Würzburg's earliest history can be traced back to around 1000 BC. The Celts at that time chose Mount Mary to settle, and then gradually expanded down the mountain. By the seventh century AD, Würzburg became the official residence of the dukes of the Frankish Duchy. Later, Würzburg gradually became a cultural center. The Bishop's Palace, which began construction in 1720, is the most famous Baroque building in Würzburg. That night, we took a night tour of the old town and walked to the Old Main Bridge. The statues on the bridge, the Main River, the illuminated Marienburg Castle, the many tourists drinking on the bridge, the wafting aroma of wine, laughter, and the church bells formed a beautiful picture. So beautiful! Würzburg can be regarded as the starting point of Germany's Romantic Road. The next morning, it was a rare sunny day, so we drove to the mountain on the other side of the river to visit the Castle of Mount Mary. From the high vantage point we had a bird's eye view of the entire city and the Main River, as well as the vineyards on the distant hills. It was a beautiful view. Go down the mountain and return to the city to visit the Würzburg Palace. Its murals, ceiling paintings, floors and three-dimensional art are breathtaking. The palace gardening in the back garden is also worth seeing. In the evening, I revisited the Old Main Bridge and saw tourists queuing in front of two bars at the bridge head. Those who had bought wine stood on the bridge with their glasses in hand, tasting the wine and chatting. It is worthy of being a wine city!
