Wuning County, under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, is located in the northwest of Jiangxi Province, in the middle reaches of the Xiu River, at the strategic border of the three provinces of Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi. To the east, it borders Ruijin City, De'an County, and Yongxiu County, to the south, it borders Jing'an County, to the west and southwest, it is connected to Xiushui County, and to the north, it neighbors Yangxin County and Tongshan County of Hubei Province. The county covers an area of 3,507 square kilometers. Wuning County was the territory of the Marquis of Ai during the Shang dynasty, hence it was known as Ancient Ai, and it was officially established as a county in the fourth year of Jian'an during the Eastern Han Dynasty (199 AD). Wuning integrates reservoir areas, old revolutionary base areas, mountainous areas, and forested areas, with a rich cultural heritage and simple local customs. Historically, renowned scholars and officials such as Tao Yuanming, Liu Hun, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Zhou Lianxi, and Sheng Wenyu have served, toured, or lived in seclusion here. Wuning County is a nationally recognized county for cultural advancement, with folk arts such as drum song, tea-picking opera, and opera society fire listed in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage.
