Donghu Lotus Garden: New Rhyme of Lotus, Blooming Splendor On June 6, 2025, as the new exhibition window after the relocation of the China Lotus Research Center, Donghu Lotus Garden grandly opened on the north side of Donghu Plum Garden. Inside the garden, lush greenery overlaps, and dew drops roll on green leaves, with lotus fragrance filling the air and captivating scenery, like a flowing ink wash painting. The China Lotus Research Center has established the "China Lotus Germplasm Resource Garden" since 1993, and to date, it has collected and preserved over 1,200 varieties of lotus. The 500 rare varieties added last year further enhance its collection, making it the national-level germplasm resource garden with the most comprehensive lotus varieties, best quality, and most scientific preservation methods in the country. The center employs two systems: pond cultivation and pot cultivation, emphasizing both scientific classification and meticulous management to ensure the long-term preservation and healthy propagation of germplasm resources. In terms of variety classification, the research center combines international cultivated plant nomenclature rules with traditional Chinese binary classification, primarily based on the number of petals (i.e., flower type), dividing lotus into seven major variety groups: Single-petal Chinese Lotus, Semi-double Chinese Lotus, Double Chinese Lotus, Multi-layered Chinese Lotus, Thousand-petal Chinese Lotus, Chinese Lotus Subspecies, and Sino-American Hybrid Lotus. Among these, the first five categories are hailed as "Superior Chinese Lotus Varieties," representing the core strength and traditional essence of lotus breeding. Donghu Lotus Garden is located south of the East Gate of Donghu Plum Garden and the main entrance of Donghu Cherry Blossom Garden, offering convenient transportation and an elegant environment.
