Since the Tang and Song dynasties, Wenzhou has been famous for its production of lacquerware. During the Song Dynasty, large-scale production workshops were formed, with both production and sales thriving, and products were even exported overseas. The exquisite lacquer art has been passed down to later generations, giving rise to related crafts such as Ou sculpture, sandwiched lacquerware, and lacquer painting. Ou sculpture, evolved from the traditional lacquer art technique of piled lacquer, is known as the 'Oriental Three-Dimensional Oil Painting' and has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. The piled lacquer technique, also known as 'piled door', involves creating patterns with lacquer putty. During the Song Dynasty, Wenzhou was the manufacturing center of Chinese lacquer art. The sutra and relic boxes unearthed from the Hui Guang Pagoda and the lacquer sculpted jewelry decorations on the Bodhisattva colored sculptures unearthed from the White Elephant Pagoda all demonstrate the superb skills of ancient Wenzhou craftsmen. As early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties, Yongjia on the north bank of the Ou River had already begun producing primitive porcelain, which by the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty had developed into true porcelain. Wenzhou Ou kiln, founded during the Eastern Han Dynasty, matured during the Jin Dynasties, and entered a prosperous period in the Northern Song Dynasty. Among them, Piao porcelain is a representative of southern celadon. The brown-colored celadon under the glaze from the Six Dynasties period is an important milestone in the history of ceramic development.
