Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Alicante (Region) Also known as Pies Negros Castle (“Black Feet”) or simply Villena Castle, this is a fortified military building of Arab origin that was renovated and expanded in the 15th century. It has no moat and is built with a double wall. The outer walls are reinforced by twelve towers, while the inner walls are taller and contain an imposing keep located at the southeast end of the space. The tower is square in plan and divided into four sections; the lower two floors are built of Almohad brick and stone, and the upper two floors are built of stone. The ground floor retains the traditional Almohad star-shaped ribbed vaulting, which makes it unique among Spanish military architecture.
