Wat Si Muang

Wat Si Muang, also known as Wat Si Muang (ວັດສີເມືອງ), is one of the most important and sacred temples in Vientiane, Laos. Located on Chao Anou Road, it was built in 1563 during the reign of King Setthathirath. This temple is considered the site of the city pillar of Vientiane and is part of the 'Si 5', which includes other significant temples in Vientiane such as Si Phoun, Si Than, and Si Buaban. The legend of this temple involves a pregnant woman named 'Si' who sacrificed her life along with her unborn child and horse to become the guardian spirit of the city pillar. The people of Vientiane call her 'Ya Mae Si Muang' and named the temple after her. Inside the temple, there is a revered Buddha statue that is highly respected by the people of Vientiane. It is believed that those who come to pray at this temple will have their wishes granted. Additionally, it is an important site for royal religious ceremonies in Laos.
