Patuxai is a compound word from the word "Pratu" which has a direct meaning and "Pratu" comes from the Sanskrit word "Chaya" which means "victory". Together, they mean the gate of victory. Patuxai was built in 1957 - 1968. It was originally called "Anusawalee" which means "memory" to commemorate the brave heroes, both Laotian people and soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II and the war of independence from France. Later in 1975, the "Pathet Lao" communist revolutionary movement seized power from the government decisively and the king abdicated. The government was changed to communist socialism, so the name was changed from Anusawalee to "Pratuxai" to honor the victory of the revolutionary council, which has been used to this day. Patuxai's art is Lan Xang art. Legendary animals from Buddhist beliefs, such as Kinnari, Naga, and gods from Brahmanism and Hinduism, are used as decorations. The surrounding area has a fountain show with music and a Patuxai garden.
