Teshima (pronounced "Teshima") is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea. As its name suggests, this small island is rich enough to be self-sufficient on the island, with pure spring water, crops, rice, and fish. Teshima was hit by pollution caused by illegal dumping of industrial waste that continued from around 1978. Pollution on an unprecedented scale, fish could no longer be caught, children suffered from asthma, and negative rumors continued for several years.
