Tongxiang (桐乡) is in northern Zhejiang Province in the Hangjiahu (杭嘉湖) Plain hinterland at the intersection of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. Tongxiang has a flat terrain, many rivers, and a first-rate natural environment. The historically and culturally renowned town of Wuzhen (乌镇) is in Tongxiang. The residences along the streets of Wuzhen date primarily from the Qing era and are well preserved. Also in Tongxiang are the Former Residence of Mao Dun, the Luojiajiao (罗家角) archaeological site, and other Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

The ancient town has been renovated and repaired on its original site for nine years. It mainly presents the architectural style of the Southern Song Dynasty. There is no noise brought by crowded crowds, but an ancient charm that lingers.
Zen Hall: Located in the middle of the water in front of the Fushan Pagoda. Fushan Temple: Inside the temple, there are two ginkgo trees that are nearly 900 years old. Fushan Pagoda: The newly built nine-story pagoda offers an excellent view from the top. Beigeng Building: Climbing up, one can overlook the ancient town's layered grey tile roofs. Puyang Guild Hall: An exhibition hall for understanding the history of Puyang. Shuangfang Zen Garden: A combination of a teahouse and a theater.
You can also experience rowing a boat, with boat rides available at the service center pier and Puyang Shilang pier. Boat tickets are 60 yuan per person, for about 25 minutes.

The scenic area is large, and it's better to stay inside for two days to get a better experience! It includes tickets and double breakfast, and you can enjoy services such as free luggage transfer, free shuttle bus rides, etc. There are both 3 upscale hotels and more than a dozen down-to-earth inns in the ancient town, like Siyanjing Inn and Beilangpeng Inn, which both have the atmosphere of a Jiangnan courtyard～

Although it's a scenic area, the prices are really not expensive! You can try local specialties in restaurants like the Ancient Well Inn. The snack street is also highly recommended! Stinky tofu, baked buns, shaomai, and radish siu bing are amazing!

Wuzhen during the off-season on a clear day is truly the best
I was lucky to encounter a beautiful sunny day in the spring, and since March is the off-season, there weren't many tourists, which made for a great experience. Here are some tips:

The most convenient way is to take a taxi from Tongxiang high-speed train station🚄, which takes about 45 minutes and costs 50-70 yuan.
🧚🏻♀️Accommodation
The food and lodging in Wuzhen are uniformly managed, so there's no need to worry about being overcharged. I recommend staying in the scenic area. I booked a double package for 699 yuan on Ctrip, which included one night in a waterside B&B, tickets to the Xizha scenic area, an electric car in the scenic area, and experiences like Hanfu dress-up, among other things.

Another advantage of staying inside is that your luggage can be delivered directly to your room, and when you leave, they can also transport it to the visitor center at the entrance for you. The service is very thoughtful.
🧚🏻♀️Other
The mini-program 'Wuzhen Tourism Service' contains all the maps of attractions and food. Just navigate according to your preferences. There are also fixed activities and performances, such as flower drum opera, Pingtan, shadow play, tea art, etc. The times and locations are clearly written there. Personally, I think you can spend a day and a night in Xizha without rushing.

The most recommended is 'Ling Shui Man Bar'. The view by the window is amazing, and the coffee is very good.

This is a local breakfast unique to the area, seemingly only available to those staying in the scenic area. There are only over 300 free spots per day (we booked too late and missed out, so be sure to reserve a day in advance, or you can also pay for it). It ends before 9:30 am.
😇In summary, the facilities and services throughout the scenic area are very comprehensive, and the prices are not exorbitantly high as in some tourist areas. You can truly relax and enjoy good food, drinks, and accommodation. The service staff inside are all very friendly. I really like the gentle and polite way people from Jiangsu and Zhejiang speak. The entire scenic area of Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town is filled with antique buildings. It's great to visit and take photos in Hanfu! I knew a few years ago that a similar ancient town was being planned next to Wuzhen, and at that time I just thought, 'Why another fake ancient town, and right next to Wuzhen, can this even work?' After six years of development, with an area three times larger than Wuzhen and an investment of 7.1 billion yuan, Puyuan Ancient Town has been in trial operation for a while, and it seems to have a good reputation. Despite my skepticism, as an ancient town enthusiast, I couldn't help but take my parents to visit. After touring the town, I must say, it is the most complete of all the new Jiangnan ancient towns I have visited, and it's not at all inferior to Wuzhen, far exceeding my expectations!
I thought it was an artificial ancient town with no historical foundation, but after learning more, I found out that its history dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty when Emperor Gaozong fled south. At that time, this place was just a rural market called Youhu. The scholar Pufeng moved here after being appointed as the Deputy Marshal to Lin'an, and it became the permanent residence of the Pu family. During the reign of Emperor Lizong of Song, Pufeng's sixth-generation descendant, Pudou, was appointed as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, and his residence was granted the name 'Puyuan', which is how the ancient town got its name. Since then, Puyuan has been known for its scholarly atmosphere and strong cultural environment. The convergence of merchants also brought economic prosperity to the ancient town, especially the silk industry, which was once known as 'the number one silk in the world' and was listed as one of the five major market towns in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today's Puyuan Ancient Town is based on the 'Puyuan Town Chronicles' and deeply crafted with 'Pu Shilang' as the cultural thread. Stepping into the ancient town, you are immediately surrounded by the charm of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the envisioned 'grand town of Jiahe' is fully materialized.
Although I knew that the designer of Puyuan was Chen Xianghong, the same designer of Wuzhen, I was still shocked by the details here. He understands Jiangnan and Tongxiang so well, finding a balance between poetry and the mundane in everything from architecture to culture. At first glance, it has the appearance of Wuzhen, with Song-style architecture as the main feature of the houses built along the water, arranged in an orderly fashion, revealing the unique craftsmanship of Jiangnan through the intricate wood and brick carvings. Every street, courtyard, and stall has been thoughtfully designed and arranged, satisfying visitors' desire to take photos while also maximizing the immersive experience of the ancient town. Unlike other ancient towns that have a street full of stinky tofu and milk tea, here the shops are few but each has its own characteristics, similar to Wuzhen's operation model. You can browse the unique cloth art and cultural creations, visit the Beigeng Tower to learn about Puyuan's past and present, taste Song-style pastries, traditional oily dumplings, and shaomai in the food street, sit in a teahouse to listen to storytelling, or follow the schedule to watch folk performances. If you stay late enough, you can even watch a night patrol show.
In Puyuan, it's impossible to finish taking photos, as everywhere is a scene of traveling through time. Siwan Bridge, Songyue Bridge, Yueyang Bridge... Nine well-preserved ancient bridges lie quietly on the green river, Fushan Pagoda, Fushan Temple, Puyuan Chamber of Commerce, Guandi Temple, Yue Family Courtyard...
