Lotus Blooms at Shinobazu Pond

Close to the southern entrance of Ueno Park, there is a large beautiful pond that is filled with rows and rows of lotus plants - that is Shinobazu Pond. While I went during the off season when the flowers had not bloomed, it was still a pretty sight to see an entire field of lotus leaves. There are plenty of viewing decks for a better view as well as birdwatching, and you could also pay for a boat ride. Cross over a bridge and you can find the Bentendo Temple at the centre of it all, in a little island surrounded by the pond. This is a Buddhist temple that is dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, who is often depicted playing the “biwa” instrument as seen on the outside of the temple.
