Learn About Japan’s History of Advertising

While there are plenty of museums scattered across Tokyo, one of the lesser known and more unique ones is right here at Caretta Shiodome, a short walk from Shiodome station. The Ad Museum Tokyo showcases the growth and development of the advertising industry in Japan, detailing from all the way back during the Edo period. Writeups are provided in both English and Japanese, and you can follow through the perimeter of the room to read them in chronological order. Samples of handdrawn advertisements from the past are put up on display, alongside newer digital advertisements playing on the screens. There’s a cute little postcard that you can stamp through the stations and bring home as a souvenir. Note that while entrance is free, you will need to first make a reservation online to book a one-hour timeslot, which is strictly enforced due to the small space.
