Afternoon Tea with a Tokyo Tower View at THE MOON

Experience the Christmas season afternoon tea at THE MOON, a restaurant offering the highest afternoon tea in Japan. Named "AfterMOON Tea" as a playful nod to the restaurant's name, this venue is located at one of Tokyo's iconic observation decks, predating newer spots like Shibuya Sky and Azabudai Hills. Occupying one-third of the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Tokyo City View, the restaurant boasts exclusive views stretching from Tokyo Tower to Skytree. With the opening of this restaurant, it seems to have monopolized the view, though its popularity as an observation deck is now being challenged by newer locations. After seeing Instagram posts featuring a six-tier tray with Tokyo Tower in the background, I decided to make a reservation. Note that this is one of the few places in Japan that does not accept single-person reservations for afternoon tea. I booked for two but dined alone, which is something I'm used to from domestic experiences. Since the restaurant is located within Tokyo City View, the process to access it is unique. If you already have a Tokyo City View ticket, you can use it to access the observation deck and the restaurant. However, purchasing a ticket for the observation deck is required. For those with restaurant reservations, head to the "THE MOON" booth located to the right of the ticket counter on the 3rd floor. Here, you'll receive a complimentary elevator ticket, which includes the name of the reservation holder printed on it. Note that this ticket does not grant access to Tokyo City View or the Mori Art Museum; it is solely for elevator access to the restaurant. From the souvenir corner, you can even catch a glimpse of the Shinjuku skyline. Although I booked for two, I only collected one complimentary ticket since I was visiting alone. I joined other Tokyo City View visitors in the elevator to ascend to the 52nd floor. The restaurant entrance is located at the far end on the left side. I attended the first afternoon tea session at noon. The seating arrangement includes eight window seats with Skytree views and eight with Tokyo Tower views. The base price for afternoon tea starts at 6,500 yen per person or 13,000 yen for two. An additional 1,000 yen per person is charged for guaranteed window seating, though specific window seats cannot be reserved. The Tokyo Tower seats, located on the right side, offer views of both Tokyo Tower and Skytree. I was fortunate to be seated at position #1, directly facing Tokyo Tower. For two hours, I had an unobstructed view of Tokyo Tower, making this trip's scenic experience a perfect 100. I spent a long time gazing at Tokyo Tower, just as I had been mesmerized by Skytree three hours earlier. 🤣 The afternoon tea menu includes four savory items, seven sweets, scones, and Shine Muscat grapes. Since I booked for two, all items were served in double portions. My personal approach is to try one of each item first and then eat both portions of the ones I find delicious. The drink menu includes three special beverages and unlimited refills. I enjoyed four drinks, including two from the special menu. The food quality here is secondary; the breathtaking views are the main attraction. The exclusivity and tranquility of the experience make it well worth the price.
