Jiyugaoka: A Blend of Trendy Lifestyle and Sophisticated Charm

Jiyugaoka, often regarded as one of the most desirable places to live in Tokyo, is not a typical tourist destination. However, it’s a favorite spot for locals, including myself, to visit and explore. With its stylish selection shops, trendy cafes, and an overall elegant atmosphere, Jiyugaoka exudes a unique charm year-round. Located in a small area within Meguro City, Jiyugaoka is adjacent to the affluent Setagaya Ward. The area gained its name in 1932 due to the establishment of Jiyugaoka Gakuen and the Tokyu Jiyugaoka Station. Despite its small population of less than 10,000 residents, it has become a notable part of Tokyo. The famous Japanese author Tetsuko Kuroyanagi depicted her childhood school life in Jiyugaoka in her book "Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window." The northern part of Jiyugaoka is marked by European-style architecture, which has made it one of the most sought-after residential areas in Tokyo. Along the gentle slopes of 2-chome and 3-chome, you’ll find numerous restaurants, cafes, and dessert shops. Among them, LA VITA stands out, offering an ambiance that feels more like Europe than Japan. Just a 10-minute train ride from Shibuya, Jiyugaoka is easily accessible. Strolling through its streets, you can discover unique items in its boutique stores, enjoy a cup of coffee, indulge in creamy soft-serve ice cream, and finally visit Kumano Shrine.
