2025 Tokyo Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in February)
The epicenter of sophisticated culture, cutting-edge fashion, futuristic buildings, and all things weird and wonderful, Tokyo is a city of extremes that attracts over 14 million visitors each year, and it should be on your bucket list too.The capital city of Japan is situated at the Tokyo Bay on the Pacific coast of central Honshu (Japan’s main island). While the Greater Tokyo Area is made up of Tokyo and the three neighboring prefectures, Metropolitan Tokyo consists of 23 wards and municipalities. Tourists are most likely to be residing in central areas like Chiyoda, Minato, Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Taito wards. In addition to being the political and economic center of Japan, Tokyo is also the seat of the Emperor and the imperial family. In terms of population, the Greater Tokyo Area with over 37 million people is the most populous metropolitan area in the world.Originally named Edo, Tokyo has a long and rich history of over 400 years. The city grew in wealth, power, and size over the centuries with its population reaching over a million by the mid-eighteenth century. The Emperor moved to Edo during Meiji Restoration in 1868, hence renaming the city Tokyo and it became the capital of Japan. With the devastation of earthquakes and war, much of Tokyo was destroyed by the middle of the 20th century. In the 1980s, rapid economic growth and increased global presence transformed Tokyo into one of the world’s economic powerhouses.Visitors to Tokyo will be attracted to its most famous temples, towers, parks, and shopping streets, but this city with a perfect blend of old and new has so much more to offer. Get into character and go go-karting around town, experience the insanity at the Robot Restaurant, see a Kabuki theatre performance in Ginza, and soak in an Onsen with the locals.Foodies alert! You’ll be spoiled for choice in Tokyo for authentic local and regional Japanese cuisines, as well as international delights. Be sure to savor delicious culinary creations like tempura, curry rice, sashimi, soba, patisseries, unagi, and sukiyaki. Not sure what to bring home as a souvenir? Tokyo is world-renowned for being a shopping paradise, visitors can find countless unique local specialty items as gifts and mementos. Consider getting a toy from one of five million vending machines in Japan, top-up on those high-quality Japanese cosmetics, or bring home an omamori lucky charm.

A Cozy Café Time at Salon Ginza Sabou🍵
#tokyotravel
I recently visited Salon Ginza Sabou with a friend on the weekend, and it was such a pleasant surprise! Despite being located in a commercial building, the café exudes a stylish, peaceful vibe that makes you forget you're in the middle of a busy shopping area.
We ordered the Japanese-style tiramisu served in a wooden masu cup, and it was absolutely delicious. The dessert had the perfect balance of soft, creamy mascarpone with chewy white mochi and crunchy chocolate bits – a lovely twist on the traditional tiramisu.
Two reasons I'd recommend this spot:
1. The unique Japanese-inspired twist on classic desserts – you won’t find anything like this anywhere else!
2. The serene, sophisticated atmosphere that offers a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A Must-Visit for Potterheads! Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo: The Making of Harry Potter.
For Harry Potter fans in Tokyo, the ultimate pilgrimage site is undoubtedly the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo: The Making of Harry Potter! You can easily reach it by taking the Seibu Railway or the Toei Subway to Toshimaen Station, and then it's just a 2-minute walk from there. However, be sure to purchase your tickets and reserve your time slot online in advance to avoid a wasted trip.
As soon as you enter the Great Hall of Hogwarts, the impressive scenes and movie sets from the films are instantly transformed into a large screen, with many nostalgic posters on display. The various realistic scenes are truly awe-inspiring, with a high level of detail.

Ogawa Coffee Laboratory Tokyo
#japantrip
Kyoto's famous hand-poured coffee shop Ogawa Coffee will be in the basement of the new Roppongi shopping mall Azabudai in May🏢
The third coffee lab opened in Tokyo🎊
The space is stylish and simple. There are only two bar counters in the store.
For customers to communicate directly with baristas🗣️
Guests can smell the coffee beans one by one in the coffee bean cabinet on the left and choose their favorite beans🫘
Or you can talk to the barista and have them recommend the right coffee beans.
Holding a glass of Ethiopian medium dark roasted sun-dried iced hand brewed coffee, it tastes good🥤
Walking back to the ground from the mall, I just saw the last silhouette of Tokyo Tower🗼

A Unique Solo Trip in Japan: From Tokyo to Yamagata Prefecture.
This is my first solo trip, but I didn't want to stay only in Tokyo. So, I customized an itinerary for myself to visit some less crowded places.
D1 Nakameguro
D2 Daikanyama, Tokyo Tower, Shibuya
D3 Ginzan Onsen
D4 Mogami River (Furukuchi Port - Kusakizaki Port), Mount Haguro
D5 Yamadera, Kajo Park
D6 Fox Village, Flower Nagai Line
D7 Lina World, Zao Onsen
D8 Shoyoen, Kinugawa
D9 Nikko Rinnoji Temple, Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, Shinkyo Bridge
D10 Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Takeshita Street, Omotesando, Roppongi
D11 Azabu Juban, Tsukiji, Ginza
【Recommended Hotel】
Zao: Miyamaso Takamiya
- The oldest onsen in Zao
- Even the Japanese Emperor has stayed here
- Nine different types of baths
- Delicious kaiseki cuisine
- Excellent service from the staff
【Tips】
Ginzan Onsen: The inspiration for the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away"! From December 20th this year to March 31st next year, there will be entry restrictions (day-trip visitors must purchase an entry ticket, with a limit of 100 people per hour), so day-trippers should take note. If you want to stay in a hotel within Ginzan Onsen, remember to book early. However, Ginzan Onsen is not as large as you might imagine, and half a day is more than enough.
Fox Village: Located in a remote area, it is recommended to visit in the morning. The foxes roam freely in the park, and it is highly recommended to pay to hold and interact with the adorable foxes.🦊
Lina World: Due to its remote location, there are not many visitors, giving it a slightly abandoned amusement park feel, which is great for photography. Due to weather conditions, many rides may not be operational, so be sure to check before you go.🙈
Zao: Another favorite natural onsen destination. In winter, you can ski in Zao or take a cable car to see the snow monsters. The best time to visit Zao is from late January to February, so remember to book early.
Students will be thrilled to stay at this hotel in Tokyo!

A trip to Japan is not just a journey, but a wonderful journey of self-discovery. We look forward to your exploration and discovery!
I found a Hokkaido alternative and a winter tour of Your Name!
This is one of the most unforgettable snow scenes I've ever seen!
Because of the scene in Your Name where Taki stands in front of the "Hida" photo wall in the museum, I remember this mysterious landlocked area deeply.
Gifu Prefecture has a rustic name, but it is not only the filming location of Your Name, but also a world heritage fairy tale town, and snow as dreamy as Hokkaido! The key is - there are not many people!
.
Your Name pilgrimage:
Mainly concentrated in Hida Takayama and Hida Furukawa, you can travel back and forth by JR or bus.
⛰Takayama: The old town of Machiya, which retains the Edo style of 400 years ago, has mostly been turned into restaurants, cafes, etc., and it is very interesting to visit! You can also experience a rickshaw! There will be winter-only events in the nearby Mori below freezing.
Filming location: Miyagawa Morning Market, Hie Shrine
.
🌊Furukawa: The town is small and very, very quiet. Visit the streets of the late Edo and early Meiji periods in Shirakabe Dozo Street, a must-see for a pilgrimage.
Filming location: Must-see Furukawa JR Station, Hida beef mascot in the station, specialty snack Gohei mochi, Sakura Bussankan weaving movie hand rope
World Heritage Fairy Tale Town:
Shirakawa-go, this is one of the top 10 must-see lists of my life - a white village surrounded by deep mountains, with triangular huts sitting in between, really beautiful to the point of being unreal!
Transportation: You can take a bus from Nagoya or Hida Takayama, and you can make a day trip
.
Magome-juku, back to Edo:
This is the only way to connect Kyoto and Tokyo in the 17th century, built on mountain roads, steep terrain, rickshaw horses really can't cross, so they have to leave the horses at the station, hence the name.
It takes about 2 hours from Tajimi City, but the snow scene on the mountain road is really spectacular! Step into the snow on the cobblestone path of Magome-juku and admire the Edo houses on both sides. It seems to take me back to that era.
.
My 4-day itinerary:
DAY 1: Beijing - Nagoya - Tajimi City
DAY 2: Magome-juku - Ena Gorge - Taisho Village
DAY 3: Hida Takayama - Hida Furukawa - Hida Takayama
DAY 4: Shirakawa-go - Nagoya - Beijing
(Ena Gorge is generally personal, no need to go on purpose)
.
Transportation:
Direct flights from Beijing to Nagoya, and then transfer through JR + Meitetsu Bus, you can use the Dragon Ascent Road Pass, there are different routes for three days and five days.
.
The first trip of the new year, if you don't want to squeeze people in Hokkaido, you might as well travel in the opposite direction and go to the niche Gifu!!

Solo Trip to Tokyo, Japan
#tokyotravel #tokyo #japan
Went to Japan as a solo traveler. Tokyo is the first city I visited. Was surprised with the very fast pace the people had. Streets and train stations were very busy and crowded. A bit stressful for me to be honest but since I was on holiday I could managed and adapted with that. People were nice and kind, that one time when I asked for direction to a couple, they walked me to the place and it’s not that close. 😭 In regard to Japanese foods, I liked to eat in local small restaurants as the price is lower yet the taste still wins. Would recommend to stay at least three days but five - six days would allow you to explore the city more. Ah, important to note is that places in Tokyo are far one to each other and with the fact that Tokyo is a big city, taking public transportation is suggested.
A Spiritual and Cultural Gem: Senso-ji Temple Review
Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, offers a truly immersive experience into Japan's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. As the oldest temple in the city, its grand entrance gate, the Kaminarimon, immediately captivates visitors with its iconic red lantern and intricate details. The bustling Nakamise Street leading to the temple is lined with vibrant shops, offering traditional snacks and souvenirs, adding a lively touch to the visit.
Once inside the temple grounds, the peaceful atmosphere contrasts beautifully with the surrounding city buzz. The main hall, or Hondo, is an architectural marvel, and the incense-filled air evokes a sense of calm. Visitors can take part in traditional customs, like drawing omikuji (fortune slips) or praying at the temple, making it a deeply personal and meaningful stop.
Whether you're drawn by its historical significance, cultural richness, or the chance for some reflective tranquility, Senso-ji Temple is an unforgettable part of any trip to Tokyo.
