This is the Bentendo Hall, built on a small hill southeast of the main hall of Sensoji Temple. The principal image is said to be an old woman named Benzaiten because of her white hair. It is said to be one of the three Benten deities of the Kanto region, and was worshipped by the Odawara Hojo clan. The Bell of Time was recast by the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, in 1692, and is famous for the haiku by Matsuo Basho, "Clouds of flowers, is the bell in Ueno or Asakusa?"
