World Heritage Hadrian's Palace

Hadrian's Palace in Tivoli, Lazio Region, Italy (Google map) is an extraordinary architectural heritage of Emperor Hadrian, one of the Five Wise Emperors of Rome. It bears witness to the once glorious Roman Empire. Listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1999, it is one of the best-preserved and most visited archaeological sites in Italy. By today's standards, Hadrian was definitely a travel enthusiast. He traveled almost throughout the Roman Empire, reaching as far north as England, where he built Hadrian's Wall named after him in Brampton, and as far southwest as England. Mauritania in Africa reaches as far east as the Euphrates River in today's Middle East. Hadrian was born in Italica near Seville, Spain on January 24, 76 AD. In 117 AD, as the adopted son of Trajan, the second emperor of the Antoninus dynasty of ancient Rome, he inherited the Roman Empire. . Hadrian's Palace was built from 118 to 138 AD. The villa consists of residential buildings, a spa, a fairy pool, a pavilion, a gardener, which alternate in a completely unusual distribution. The various buildings are connected to each other not only by surface paths, but also by a network of underground paths for vehicles and pedestrians. The richness of the villa's architectural and sculptural decoration is extraordinary and has been the subject of enthusiastic pursuit and systematic study since the Renaissance. The loss of marble and sculptures in villas already occurred in the Middle Ages, as they could be reused, resulting in the villa's decorative materials being widely dispersed and thus included in almost all major museums and collections in Loma, other parts of Italy and Europe.
