As one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet, Yamdrok Lake is not only a stone's throw away from Lhasa but also a secret place I have longed for. A day is enough to travel to and from Yamdrok Lake from Lhasa, and the breathtaking scenery is beyond words to describe its beauty. 🌊 - Yamdrok Lake, which means 'Jade Lake on the Plateau' in Tibetan, is regarded by Tibetans as the 'Turquoise Earring Dropped by the Goddess'. 🌊 It is the largest enclosed inland lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an altitude of 4441 meters, a shoreline stretching 250 kilometers, and a drainage area reaching an astonishing 6100 square kilometers. 🌊 Yamdrok Lake's bird islands and the number of bird species are rare nationwide. Various birds inhabit and nest on these islands. 🌊 Embracing Yamdrok Lake are snow-capped peaks that never melt, with the highest altitude exceeding 7000 meters. The lake, snow peaks, and blue sky complement each other, creating magnificent and tranquil scenes. 🌊 It is said that the color of Yamdrok Lake's water changes unpredictably with the sunlight, light blue, dark blue, peacock blue... Each shade of blue is like God's overturned palette, spreading the purest colors on this mysterious land. When the sky is overcast, the lake surface turns gray. 🌊 - 🌈Tips: 1️⃣ It is recommended to join a one-day tour group to Yamdrok Lake. Self-driving is not advised due to the high altitude and potential danger. There are many one-day tour routes to Yamdrok Lake in Lhasa, which are very cost-effective, usually around 200 yuan. Joining a tour group is not tiring, and you can enjoy the scenery or rest on the bus. 2️⃣ Yamdrok Lake is nearly a thousand meters higher in altitude than Lhasa, which may cause altitude sickness. It is recommended to prepare oxygen bottles in advance, as the tour group's oxygen bottles are particularly expensive. 3️⃣ Generally, there are half-day or one-day tour options for Yamdrok Lake. The half-day tour usually only includes Yamdrok Lake, while the one-day tour includes other attractions such as the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley and the Karola Glacier. It is recommended to choose the one-day tour for a richer experience.
