#springitinerary Taiping, the very first city in Malaysia to have a Chinese name, was once the capital of Perak state. Two hundred years ago, it was called Larut, but after several wars over tin mining, it was renamed “Taiping” — meaning “peace.” Though the mining era ended and the mines dried up, the abandoned pits filled with water from frequent rains, creating these stunning lakes by the late 19th century. Driving along, I saw those trees holding hands by the water and for a moment, I thought I was back in Hangzhou... haha! 🍃🌲 If you’re traveling from Ipoh to Penang and pass through Taiping, don’t miss the old town’s highlights — Anton Coffee, the first Catholic church, and the first prison in Perak.
