Wang Fu Taro Balls: Giant Taro and Sweet Potato Balls in Ximending

#newyearnewtrip Wang Fu Taro Balls (王福芋圓) is a modest dessert kiosk tucked away in the Wanhua district of Ximending. The unassuming shop has just two outdoor tables, meaning most visitors opt for takeaway. Despite its small and cozy setup, the kiosk has gained attention for its unique take on a popular Taiwanese dessert—taro balls. The menu features a variety of desserts, from tofu pudding and grass jelly to smoothies. One of the standout offerings is the Signature bowl, which comes with a base of brown sugar shaved ice topped with a mix of regular taro and sweet potato balls, mung beans, and red beans. The dish is made even more special with the addition of giant taro and sweet potato balls, which are roughly the size of a fist—about five times larger than the typical serving. These oversized balls bring a new dimension to the dish, offering a chewy, QQ texture that makes them especially satisfying. The combination of ingredients provides a balance of flavors and textures, with the taro and sweet potato balls offering an extra hit of sweetness and heartiness. For a bowl that can comfortably serve 3-4 people, the price is reasonable, usually under 85 TWD. The size and generosity of the portions make it an excellent value. Though the shop is relatively new, many people discover it through word of mouth or online reviews. What sets Wang Fu apart from other dessert stalls is the rarity of giant taro and sweet potato balls, which are not commonly found elsewhere. These large, chewy balls have a satisfying density and a taste that highlights the natural sweetness of the taro and sweet potato, with bits of the root vegetables clearly detectable in each bite. Despite the shop's simplicity, the quality of the desserts, particularly the giant taro balls, leaves a lasting impression. It's a spot where those in the know can enjoy a comforting, satisfying dessert that’s both filling and reasonably priced.
