It was a modern military fortress built by the Qing Dynasty to strengthen Taiwan's coastal defense and resist foreign enemies after the "Mudan Incident". It was designed by British engineers hired by Taiwan Governor Shen Baozhen and built with red bricks and mud. It has a square layout, is surrounded by a moat, and has forts and barracks. It was one of the most advanced military facilities at the time. Its name "Yizai" means "immortality for trillions of years", symbolizing the firm belief in defending Taiwan.
