Gaomei Wetlands

Gaomei Wetlands (Gaomei Wildlife Sanctuary) is located on the southern side of the estuary of Dajia River in Qingshui District, Taichung City. It boasts unique wetland terrain and abundant natural wildlife resources, making it one of the few breeding grounds for wild ducks and geese in Taiwan. This area is an important ecological conservation zone. The appearance of Gaomei Wetlands changes significantly with the tides. During low tide, the entire wetland is exposed, allowing visitors to walk along the wooden boardwalk specifically designed for appreciating the natural resources of Gaomei Wetlands. The boardwalk stretches 691 meters round trip, leading to its endpoint where visitors can step into the seawater and enjoy the stunning view of the sea and sky merging into one. During high tide, the seawater completely submerges the wetlands, reaching up to the levee (viewing and resting area), leaving no trace of the wetlands visible. The wooden boardwalk can be quite slippery, so caution is advised while walking on it. It is recommended to stay overnight near Gaomei Wetlands (either at the Gaomei Lighthouse Park or the Gaomei Visitor Center camping area). In the afternoon, you can observe the natural resources such as crabs during low tide (and enjoy a beautiful sunset if the weather permits). The next morning, you can witness the full water level during high tide, which is truly a fascinating sight.
