25/3/5 Plum Blossom Viewing at Xiangxuehai, Suzhou

Upon arriving at Xiangxuehai, the first thing that catches the eye is the plaque above the main gate, inscribed with the characters “Dengwei Shengjing” in bold, elegant calligraphy. Stepping inside, I was captivated by the breathtaking scene. Records indicate that over 100,000 plum trees flourish here, boasting more than 30 varieties, including white, red, black, green calyx, and jade butterfly plums. The white plums resemble pure, flawless snow; the red plums evoke fiery passion; and the black plums exude a mysterious elegance. Strolling through the plum groves, the subtle fragrance fills the air, creating a sense of tranquility. Ascending the steps within the scenic area, I came across Wenmei Hall, Plum Blossom Pavilion, and Wanghu Pavilion. I sat quietly in Wenmei Hall, closing my eyes as the gentle breeze carried the delicate scent of plum blossoms. The roof, windows, and floor of Plum Blossom Pavilion are all adorned with plum blossom motifs. From atop Wanghu Pavilion, the panoramic view of the plum groves blending seamlessly with the distant mountains and lake is truly stunning. Xiangxuehai is not only visually beautiful but also steeped in history and culture. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty visited this place three times, and Emperor Qianlong, during his six trips to the south of the Yangtze River, never missed an opportunity to admire the plum blossoms, even leaving behind inscribed poems. The modern painter Wu Changshuo also painted "Xiangxuehai" and wrote a poem: "Ten years have passed since I last visited Xiangxuehai, the plum blossoms are me, and I am the plum blossoms." Today, immersed in this scene, I deeply understand the meaning behind these words. Xiangxuehai is a feast for both the eyes and the soul.
