The Sixth Garden of Suzhou

The Sixth Garden of Suzhou: Lion Grove Garden Lion Grove Garden was first built in the Yuan Dynasty (1342) by the disciples of the Zen master Tianru. After the master passed away in the early Ming Dynasty, the garden gradually fell into disrepair. Later, Huang Xingzu, the governor of Hengzhou, bought it and named it She Garden. In 1771, his son Huang Xi became the top scholar in the imperial examination, and he renovated the mansion garden and renamed it Wusong Garden. In 1917, Bei Runsheng, a wealthy businessman from Shanghai, bought Lion Grove Garden and spent seven years renovating it. After Bei's death, his grandson Bei Huanzhang donated Lion Grove Garden to the state in 1953. Lion Grove Garden now has the largest ancient rockery group, and the lake stone rockery is a national key cultural relic and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
