The garden was built by Shen Shiyi during the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. Shen Shiyi, whose courtesy name was Hanbo and pseudonym was Zhuzhai, was a native of Wuxian, Jiangsu Province. In the 12th year of the Shunzhi period, he passed the imperial examination and served as Xima. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, the Daotai, Anhui native Lu Jiemei, expanded it and named it "Banyuan". Because it is located to the north of Shi's Banyuan in Cangmi Lane, it is commonly known as "Bei Banyuan". It was listed as a cultural relic protection site in Suzhou in 1982 and opened to the public in 1992. The layout of the northern half of the garden is centered on a narrow and long pool, with embankments built with Huangshi and Taihu stone. It is surrounded by buildings such as land boats, four-sided halls, waterside pavilions, and half-pavilions, which are intermittently connected by winding corridors. Most of the gardens are characterized by "half", such as half bridge, half pavilion, half terrace, etc. A library is built in the northeast corner of the garden. It has a unique shape, double-eaved high pavilions, and an exterior appearance of two and a half stories. It is small and exquisite, and is unique in Suzhou gardens. There are precious flowers and trees such as boxwood and wisteria planted in the garden. Although the area is small, it has a compact layout, exquisite architecture and elegant environment.
