The Susukino venue of the Sapporo Snow Festival is not a snow sculpture, but an ice sculpture! Pure ice is shaved with a chainsaw to create artistic ice sculptures. Fish-filled ice sculptures, a specialty of the Sapporo Snow Festival, and ice sculpture competitions are also held, making it well worth seeing. At the entrance to Susukino, there is a commercial facility called Kokonosukino. Above Kokonosukino, there is a hotel, so it is perfect for sightseeing.
