Chilbaek-ui-chong is a good place to visit during your trip to Geumsan

This is a tomb and shrine for the 700 soldiers who died fighting the Japanese army during the Imjin War (1592). When the Imjin War broke out, Jo Heon (1544-1592) raised 1,700 volunteer soldiers in Okcheon, joined forces with Master Yeonggyu, and recaptured Cheongju. He then fought bravely in the Battle of Geumsan with the remaining 700 soldiers to block the Japanese army, and died there. After they died, Jo Heon’s disciples Park Jeong-ryang and Jeon Seung-eop collected their bodies and built a tomb, which is now known as the Chilbaek Tomb. In the 36th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1603), the ‘Jungbong Jo Heon Seonsaeng Ilgun Sunui Monument’ was erected, and in the 25th year of King Injo’s reign (1647), Jongyongsa Shrine was built to house the memorial tablets of the 700 volunteers. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese destroyed the volunteer army and blew up the Sunui Monument, but the people of Geumsan County hid and preserved the stone tablet pieces. In 1963, the state expanded the cemetery and built a new memorial hall and Sunui Tower in 1970. It is a very quiet place with no people on weekdays.
