Wat Mahathat is a royal temple in the former Sukhothai Palace. It is the largest temple in the city. It was built during the early Sukhothai period. The four corner pagodas are five-spire castle-shaped pagodas influenced by the art of Bagan-Hariphunchai-Lanna. It is considered one of the most complete examples of authentic Sukhothai castle-shaped pagodas left in the original condition. There is a large area within the park.
