Stavanger, the oil capital of Norway

Stavanger is Norway's fourth largest city and the administrative center of Rogaland County, with a population of nearly 150,000. It is located on the Stavanger Peninsula in southwestern Norway. The Stavanger Cathedral was completed in 1125, the same year Stavanger was officially recognized as a city. Stavanger's historic city centre has many protected wooden houses built in the 18th and 19th centuries and are considered part of the city's cultural heritage. This has resulted in the city centre and inner city retaining a small-town character with an unusually high proportion of detached houses, and has significantly contributed to the spread of urban population growth to the outer areas of Greater Stavanger. The city's population grew rapidly in the late 20th century due to the booming Norwegian offshore oil industry. Today, the oil industry is an important industry in the Stavanger region, and the city is widely known as Norway's oil capital. Headquartered in Stavanger, Equinor is Norway's largest company in the Nordic region. Several higher education institutions are also located in Stavanger, including the largest University of Stavanger. Both domestic and international military facilities are located in Stavanger, including NATO's Joint Operations Center.
