A leisure afternoon cruise on Lake Thun 🚢
After visiting the Panorama bridge Sigriswil, we took the ferry from Gunten Dorf nearby back to Thun across the beautiful Lake Thun, the largest lake in the Bernese Oberland.
The two-hour boat trip on Lake Thun starts from Interlaken West, stopping at 10 jetties before ending at Thun. You can hop on the boat at any jetty as long as the timing is right. There is a restaurant on board which serves Swiss cuisine. If you don't feel like eating, you can just sit around while enjoying the stunning views of green meadows, forests and Swiss Alps beyond. You can also see five fairytale style castles located on different parts by the shores of Lake Thun.

Staying at Därligen, a picturesque small town in 🇨🇭
We stayed a few nights in Därligen, a peaceful and beautiful small town at the south shore of Lake Thun 6 km from Interlaken. The only way to reach our accommodation by public transport is taking bus 60 from either Interlaken or Spiez train station, which departs at a regular interval of 30 min. Waking up to the stunning views of Lake Thun made our stay worthwhile despite the slight inconvenience in transportation. Attractions that be reached in 1 hour from Därligen include Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, and Panorama bridge Sigriswil, which is well-known for being the film location of Korean drama Crash Landing on You.

Crash Landing on Sigriswil bridge!!
If you are a fan of the Korean drama Crash Landing On You, you will surely recognise Panorama bridge Sigriswil as the location where the male and female leads first met each other. It became a popular tourist spot especially among Asians since then.
Sigriswil panoramic bridge is a 340-m long suspension bridge above Gummischlucht gorge between Sigriswil and Aeschlen. It is accessible by public transport by taking bus 25 from Thun train station to Sigriswil, Dorf (the final stop). Crossing the bridge as a tourist is not free though. There's a ticket booth at the entrance of the bridge which collects CHF 6 per person, which contributes to funding for bridge maintenance.
Even if you're not a fan of the drama, you can still visit this place for the magnificent vieww of the famous Bernese Oberland peaks, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, as well as Lake Thun. There are also some hiking trails nearby if you want to explore more than just the bridge.
After visiting the bridge, if the timing is right, instead of taking bus 25 back to Thun train station, you can alight at Gunten Dorf a few stops away from Sigriswil and catch the ferry which takes you back to either Thun or Interlaken across the beautiful Lake Thun. Check the ferry schedule in advance. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the ferry ride and bus ride are free!

Beautiful Trip from Interlaken to Thun!
Enjoyed a short yet memorable boat ride from Interlaken across the serene Thun lake. Nestled in the heart of Switzerland, the lake is surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery, with rolling green hills and majestic mountains creating a perfect backdrop. The crystal-clear waters reflected the sky and the peaks, making the entire journey feel like a tranquil escape into nature’s beauty.
As the boat glided smoothly across the water, we soaked in the fresh breeze and the peaceful ambiance. The picturesque villages along the shores added to the charm, each with its own unique character. It was a peaceful experience, offering a perfect break from the bustle of everyday life and a chance to connect with nature in its purest form.
Thun lake’s calm waters, combined with the stunning views, made it a ride to remember, reminding us of the simplicity and beauty that can be found in nature. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning, it’s a magical experience that shouldn’t be missed.
Thun Lake: The Unmissable Eye of God
When visiting Switzerland, besides the magnificent mountains and the beautiful snowy scenery throughout the seasons, the lakes are also one of the natural wonders that cannot be missed. Thun Lake is a prime example of these beautiful lakes. Located in the Bernese Oberland, Thun Lake is surrounded by mountains, with sapphire-blue waters that captivate at first sight. Visitors can take a boat ride to leisurely tour the entire lake, enjoying the fresh lake breeze and the stunning natural scenery.
During the boat trip, in addition to admiring the lakes and mountains, you can also catch glimpses of the surrounding castles and Swiss countryside, as if stepping into a perfect painting. The boat offers comfortable seating and dining services (a bit pricey), allowing visitors to relax and taste local delicacies. This Thun Lake tour is definitely one of the most memorable experiences in a Swiss trip, providing a serene and delightful sensory enjoyment.
Lake Thun
Lake Thun (Thunersee) is located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, surrounded by the majestic Alps. The lake is famous for its stunning views, crystal clear waters, and many attractions around it. Tourists can take a boat ride around the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are modern steamboats and boats that offer tours around the lake with stops at various small towns and villages around it. Located in the town of Thun at the eastern end of the lake, the castle offers spectacular views over the lake and the town. Inside the castle is a museum displaying local history and medieval artifacts. Another castle on the lake, Oberhofen, offers beautiful gardens and an interesting art collection. The castle also has a tower that juts out over the lake, giving it a romantic atmosphere. The area around Lake Thun has many hiking and biking trails that offer spectacular views. One popular route is to the Niesen Mountain, which is referred to as the “Swiss Pyramid” because of its unique shape. To the north of the lake are the St. Beatus Caves, a network of limestone caves that can be explored. It is home to stalactites, stalagmites, and a local legend about a monk who lived there. Lake Thun is a popular spot for water sports such as swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. The serene scenery of the lake with the Alps as a backdrop makes Lake Thun an ideal place to relax. Many visitors enjoy spending time relaxing by the lake or in one of the parks. Lake Thun offers a combination of natural beauty and rich history, making it a great destination for all types of travelers.
Spiez: Discover the Jewel by Lake Thun in a Poetic Land! 🇨🇭
Located in the southeast of Bern, Spiez is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, clear water, and fresh air. It is known as the most beautiful town in Switzerland and is a famous resort for holidays and water sports. 🏞️🇨🇭
Spiez Castle
The exterior architectural style of Spiez Castle is medieval Bernese style, and the interior decoration is a combination of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque art forms. It is one of the few historical sites in Switzerland. The exhibits in the museum are relics of previous owners of the castle and ancient furniture. 🏰
Spiez Railway Station
Spiez Railway Station is a transit station for trains to Zermatt, Interlaken, and Bern. Because the Spiez train station is higher, you can overlook the beautiful scenery below from the station, including Spiez Castle and Lake Thun. 🚂🌄
Regional and Viticultural Museum
The Regional and Viticulture Museum is housed in a traditional wooden house, focusing on viticulture and winemaking, next to a small vineyard. The town is also a base for yachting enthusiasts, with a variety of sailboats and yachts docked at the lake, attracting many tourists from all over the world to enjoy the tranquility of the lake. 🍇⛵

Golden Rays at Interlaken: A Marvel of Light and Snow
#europetrip
Interlaken, a jewel in the heart of Switzerland, offers a breathtaking spectacle where golden rays meet the pristine snow-capped mountains. This natural phenomenon, where sunlight dramatically illuminates the alpine peaks, creates a visual poetry that captivates visitors and locals alike.
A Stunning Display of Nature's Artistry
The magic happens during the early mornings and late evenings when the sun’s rays angle perfectly with the peaks, causing them to glow with a brilliant gold. This golden light, contrasting sharply against the crisp white of the snow and the deep blues of the sky, presents a mesmerizing scene. The effect is not just beautiful but also fleeting, which makes witnessing it feel all the more special and rewarding.
Ideal for Photographers and Nature Lovers
For photographers, these moments of golden illumination are a dream, offering a chance to capture the transient beauty of light and landscape in perfect harmony. Nature lovers and hikers will also find this time ideal for experiencing the tranquil yet awe-inspiring atmosphere of the Alps, as the mountains bask in the sun’s glow.
Accessible Vantage Points
Several vantage points around Interlaken provide spectacular views of this phenomenon. Whether you choose to watch from a lakeside position or take a short hike up neighboring hills, each spot offers a unique perspective on the illuminated peaks. Popular spots like Harder Kulm or the trails leading around Lake Thun are excellent choices for catching the golden rays.
Visitor Tips
- Timing is Everything: To catch the mountains in their golden glory, aim to be in place either during sunrise or an hour before sunset. These are the times when the angle of the sun is just right.
- Weather Check: Clear days are ideal for viewing the golden rays, so it’s wise to check the weather forecast before planning your outing.
- Dress Appropriately: Mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially at higher elevations, so dress warmly and in layers.

🇨🇭 Picturesque Gunten Pier @ Lake Thun
Gunten Pier is one of the most beautiful piers that I have been to. The pier offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the lake, and is a popular spot for boat cruises, fishing, and relaxation. We found this hidden gem by chance after visiting the Panorama bridge Sigriswil as we wanted to try the ferry ride on Lake Thun, the largest lake in the Bernese Oberland. We took bus 25 from Sigriswil and alighted at Gunten Dorf. The pier is a short walk away from the bus stop. It can also be reached by taking bus 25 from Thun or bus 21 from either Interlaken or Thun train station. Check the ferry schedule in advance. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the ferry ride and bus ride are free!
