Siem Reap is traditionally considered the starting point for visiting one of the world's most enigmatic temple complexes – Angkor Wat. The city thrives on tourism, and the locals are friendly and helpful. A solo traveler can feel quite safe (but beware of coconuts flying from palm trees 🌴🥥). 🏨 Siem Reap has hotels to suit every taste and budget, with swimming pools, an authentic atmosphere, and traditional Khmer food for breakfast. 🛒 The city has several large supermarkets (Angkor Market is a special mention – a giant supermarket with all kinds of goods, including a pharmacy), and fresh fruit markets (you just have to find them!). The old market in the city center is too touristy, and the prices are often out of line – bargain! I found so many beautiful ceramics in the shops around the old market; it's a shame my suitcase isn't made of rubber! 🌶️ ⚡️Be sure to buy Kampot pepper to take home if you don't plan to visit Kampot pepper farms! (I recommend La Plantation) 🧖♀️ The local massage spas are no worse than those in Thailand. And you're unlikely to find a traditional Khmer massage anywhere outside of Cambodia. I found it gentler than Thai massage. A must-try for Asian massage lovers. 🍲 Cambodian food is less spicy than Thai food. The Khmers seem to use absolutely every part of the plant in their cooking: sprouts, flowers, seeds (I think I ate young acacia catkins in my soup). And it was delicious! A special mention should be made of the traditional Khmer dish amok (a coconut milk soup with fish or chicken, often served in banana leaves and bread). Incredibly delicious and aromatic. Don't be afraid to try local street food.
