Bethany Beyond Jordan: A Holy Site in Jordan

The Bethany Baptism Site, also known as Al-Maghtas, is an archaeological World Heritage Site in Jordan, on the east bank of the Jordan River, reputed to be the original location of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The site includes two principal archaeological areas: the remnants of a monastery on a mound known as Elijah's Hill and an area close to the river with remains of churches, baptism ponds, and pilgrim and hermit dwellings. The site has been visited by three Popes (John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis), and by many heads of state, and attracts tourists and pilgrimage activity. Bethany Beyond the Jordan is a holy site that has attracted visitors for centuries. Its historical and religious significance makes it a must-visit destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. #2024wish
