World Cultural Heritage Japan Gassho Village

#Japan Attractions The historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Comprising three historic mountain villages, the site is located on 68 hectares in the remote Shogawa River basin, straddling the border of Gifu and Toyama prefectures in central Japan. Located in a snowy mountainous area, the villages are known for their clusters of farmhouses built in the Gassho-zukuri (hand-jointed) architectural style, designed to slide easily down steep ridges when snow accumulates in winter, rather than being crushed by heavy snow. Gassho Village itself is free to enter for sightseeing, but you cannot enter and exit the houses freely, but a few of them are open to visitors. I chose to go into the house that had hosted former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and take a look inside. The charge was very low and they also served hot sencha. The fees paid are negligible compared to what you get. I have been there in both winter and summer.
