Akama Shrine

This shrine enshrines Emperor Antoku. When the Taira clan was destroyed in the Battle of Dannoura, Emperor Antoku, the grandson of Taira no Kiyomori, drowned himself and his family, dying at just six years old. He is said to be the shortest-lived emperor in history. The graves of Emperor Antoku and other Taira clan members are also enshrined here. Scrolls that tell the story of the Battle of Dannoura are also on display in the Treasure Hall. The shrine's vermilion color is so beautiful that it's worth visiting just to look at it.
