2024 Shenzhen Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
The poster child of China's economic miracle, Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province transformed itself from a sleepy fishing village to a world-class megacity in less than 40 years. After being designated as one of the country's first Special Economic Zones in 1979, Shenzhen's economy grew over 13,000 times to become the business powerhouse it is today.Shenzhen sits on the east bank of the Pearl River estuary and borders Hong Kong in the south. The city consists of 9 districts and 1 new area, of which three are most popular with visitors. Futian District is the modern heart of the town or the CBD, where the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, main government offices, and top 5-star hotels are located; Luohu District has the land border cross to Hong Kong, Shenzhen Railway Station, and major shopping complexes; and Nanshan district is best known for the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park and several theme parks. Many know Shenzhen as China's tech hub or China's Silicon Valley. Home to tech giants such as Tencent and Huawei, Shenzhen is a highly desirable place to do business. The city's business-friendly policies and highly educated labor force attract more Chinese and international companies and start-ups every year. In addition to being the largest electronic product distribution center in China, this futuristic metropolis also has one of the world's top environmentally-friendly transit systems. In 1979, Shenzhen only had a population of around 20,000, but as of 2020, it is classed as a megacity with over 17 million people. Despite the high population, Shenzhen has won national prizes as a garden city and for its efforts in natural restoration. There are plenty of green spaces, stunning gardens, and nature reserves for people to explore. Top choices include the Mangrove Nature Reserve, Talent Park, Longtan Park, and Fair Lake Botanical Garden. There are numerous ways to travel to and around Shenzhen. If you are flying, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) serves the city and the region. There are multiple transfer options between the airport and city center, such as the metro (Metro Line 11 at Airport Station, which is directly linked to the Ground Transport Center), airport express and shuttle bus (around a dozen routes to key locations across the city), and by taxi.

Orange Hook Sand Glass Sea Beauty shenzhen❤️
#chinatrip
Right in Shenzhen! Checking in at Orange Hook Sand Glass Sea Beauty is crying. Taking advantage of the good weather now, it is important to come to Shenzhen to check in at Orange Hook Sand, play in the water, and take photos of this beach. It is shaped like a crescent moon, about 1000 meters long! The seawater here is clear to the bottom, just like frozen fruit sea. The sand is very white and soft, which is very comfortable to step on. Holding hands with loved ones on the beach, taking a romantic walk on the beach, it's not too romantic. Location: Judiao Sand, Nan'ao Street, Dapeng Peninsula. Time: 5:00-22:00! Suggestion: Come on a sunny day so that the sea water is clear and the bottom is visible. Parking: Navigation: There is an open-air parking lot near the entrance of the Orange Hook Sarawak Hotel on the left side
Shenzhen Rose Town: Filming location of Stephen Chow's "The New King of Comedy".
Address: No. 12, Buxin Road, Dapeng Street, Longgang District, Shenzhen
🎫Tickets: RMB60. ⚠Tips!! It's more cost-effective to book online at least 2 hours in advance. I bought mine for RMB30 at the time.
This place was formerly an abandoned industrial area. With the basic layout remaining unchanged, it has been transformed into a scenic spot integrating sightseeing, commercial photography, and wedding centers.
It is divided into two parts: a characteristic building complex and a flower sea garden area. The building complex is further divided into European, Chinese, and Korean styles. Among them, the European-style buildings are the most eye-catching. They are quite impressive to photograph, and you'll feel like you've been transported to Europe in an instant.
As this is a photography venue, it is not open all year round like ordinary scenic spots, but only on weekdays. It is recommended to enter at 9:00 AM when it opens. Generally, you can enter before 5:00 PM. During special periods with high visitor traffic, individual visitors may be restricted to entering before 12:00 PM. Moreover, the later you go, the more people there will be. After 2:00 PM, you will basically have to queue for everything you want to photograph. More importantly, there will be a lot of people behind you in your photos.
Another thing to note is that professional photography equipment, such as single-lens reflex cameras, is not allowed inside. Otherwise, it will be considered commercial photography, and you will be charged several hundred yuan per hour. You also cannot change clothes inside, as this will also be considered commercial photography. I brought a compact camera, which was fine.
At that time, it was only June and not yet the height of summer, but Shenzhen was already sweltering. In the summer, all the places in the town that are exposed to the sun are very hot and sunny. Sunscreen is definitely the first step, and you should also replenish water in a timely manner to avoid heatstroke.
Street Diary: Encountering the Future at 'Yuxin Bookstore' in Shenzhen
One of the most beautiful bookstores in Shenzhen—Yuxin Bookstore (Longhua Impression City Store)—is truly my favorite place to browse books! This bookstore boasts a super futuristic design, making you feel as if you're in a world of the future. Every corner gives you a sense of time travel.
Here, you can easily choose your favorite books, savor coffee, and enjoy the pleasure of reading. The location is convenient; take Metro Line 4 to Baishilong Station, and walk from Exit A to the third floor of Impression City Mall. The business hours are from Monday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Note! No reservation is needed, but there may be crowd control during peak times. It is recommended to visit in the morning when there are fewer people, so you can more easily buy books and enjoy your reading time. Come and explore this charming bookstore!
Dining in the lobby of a five-star hotel feels great.
Address - Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel Lobby, Shenzhen
Environment - Lounge next to the hotel lobby
Features - Great environment
Average price - $70
Rating - 8.5/10
When friends from Hong Kong visit Shenzhen in the summer, they are most afraid of insufficient air conditioning, so I prefer to go to large shopping malls or hotels. Dining and drinking in the hotel lobby lounge is actually not expensive, and the place is spacious, with high-end decor and sufficient air conditioning, making it a good choice for a light meal or rest. The restaurant offers a wide variety of drinks, so there's always something to suit your taste. As for food, there are cakes, salads, and snacks, which are good for breakfast or afternoon tea. Most importantly, the staff's service attitude is good, and the space is ample and comfortable.
Shenzhen One-Day Tour: Have a Blast at the 'Super Sports Arena'!
If you're looking for a place to spend an entire day, this sports arena in Shenzhen is a must-visit! It's a large indoor amusement park that offers a variety of entertainment facilities, from basketball and bowling to golf and indoor soccer. There's also ice skating, table tennis, archery, shooting, and more to choose from.
All activities are on the same floor, and staff are always nearby to guide you, providing excellent service! The operating hours are from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. On weekdays, it's not crowded, and many activities don't require waiting in line, making it a great value. It's recommended to buy the 699 RMB 5-time pass, plus 10 RMB for non-slip socks, which is very cost-effective.
The most exciting part is definitely the trampoline area! Although I hesitated for 15 minutes, challenging myself was really rewarding! The go-karts are also super fun. Come and enjoy this fun with your friends!
Shenzhen's 'Forest Mini Train': A Leisurely Journey in a Fairy Tale World!
Shenzhen's mini train ride costs only 30 RMB, allowing you to easily traverse the forest and enter a fairy tale world! This place is especially beautiful, and you don't need to buy an additional ticket for the park, just the mini train ticket, making it a great deal!
Navigate to the Tea Stream Valley parking lot, and you'll find the ticket office just a few meters away. The mini train runs every half hour, with the last train at 17:00. The ride takes about 50 minutes, and you can even ride until the driver finishes his shift! Since the weather is quite hot, it's recommended to go later in the day when the evening breeze is particularly pleasant, allowing you to enjoy a cool journey. Come and experience this wonderful trip!
Shenzhen Luohu Border Four-Star Hotel Top Choice
Address - 3033 Shennan East Road, Luohu, Shenzhen
Environment/Facilities - Well-decorated rooms
Features - Great location
Average Price - $170/person
Rating - 8/10
Walking from Shenzhen Kingglory Plaza to Shenzhen Yuehai Hotel is just across the street. On the other side of the hotel is Laojie and Dongmen Pedestrian Street, with a variety of specialty restaurants, making it very convenient. However, it can be a bit inconvenient if it rains. The hotel receives many Japanese tourists, and the overall decoration and maintenance are good. The lobby is bright, and the staff's service attitude is excellent. The rooms are decorated in a traditional hotel style, with no major issues in any aspect. At a price of over 300 yuan, the cost performance is considered high.

Another high-quality dim sum restaurant to recommend.
Address - 3rd Floor, Baoneng Global Mall, Nanshan District, Shenzhen
Environment/Facilities - Very spacious
Specialty - Authentic Cantonese dim sum
Average Price - $60/person
Rating - 8/10
Baoneng Global Mall is conveniently located at Exit B of Tanglang Station in Shenzhen, directly accessible via the sky bridge. The mall is very large and new, with few customers on weekdays. We went to 'Lao Guang Xin Yi' for lunch, which has only a few branches in Shenzhen. The restaurant is clean and spacious, offering a very comfortable dining experience. The staff thoughtfully boil water and brew tea for customers. You can purchase set meals through group buying for better deals, and there are currently discounts for Hong Kong customers. Several dim sum dishes are impressive in both presentation and quality, with generous portions that are very filling.
Shenzhen's Newest Internet Celebrity Check-in Spot | Melania Town
Right next to Shenzhen's Window of the World, there is a dreamy European-style town—Melania Town! This place is simply a condensed version of European charm. Not only is the entrance free, but it's also particularly suitable for taking photos. Every shot looks like a blockbuster! 📷
Everywhere on-site is photogenic 📷
The macaron-colored houses look very dreamy, especially the Prague Astronomical Clock. The super large dial is particularly unique, and the corresponding fountain ⛲️ also exudes romance. Every small sculpture on the building is exquisite. There is also a milk-orange European church, colorful small Western-style buildings, etc. Every shot can easily produce a blockbuster effect 🔥~

Dance Performance "The Grand Tang Dynasty" at Window of the World in Shenzhen
The "Grand Tang Dynasty" dance performance at Window of the World in Shenzhen is a cultural spectacle that transports audiences back to one of the most prosperous and culturally rich periods in Chinese history. This performance is not merely a dance show; it is a vivid representation of the grandeur and elegance of the Tang Dynasty, a time often considered the golden age of Chinese civilization. The performance is a stunning combination of historical authenticity, artistic creativity, and modern stage technology, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to Shenzhen.
The "Grand Tang Dynasty" dance performance is a masterful fusion of traditional Chinese dance, music, and costume design. The show begins with an introduction to the Tang Dynasty, setting the stage for the audience by highlighting the grandeur of the imperial court and the cultural achievements of the time. The dancers, adorned in elaborate costumes that replicate the attire worn by the nobles and artists of the Tang court, move gracefully to the rhythms of traditional Chinese instruments.
One of the most striking aspects of the performance is the choreography, which is meticulously designed to reflect the elegance and refinement of Tang Dynasty dance. The movements are fluid and expressive, often telling stories of love, heroism, and the beauty of nature. Each dance sequence is accompanied by a different musical composition, with instruments such as the guqin, pipa, and erhu providing an authentic soundscape that transports the audience to ancient China.
The use of modern stage technology enhances the visual impact of the performance. Sophisticated lighting, immersive background projections, and special effects create a dynamic and visually captivating experience. These elements are skillfully integrated into the performance, ensuring that they complement rather than overshadow the traditional aspects of the show.

As long as people stand on the board, they have the opportunity to see the distance higher than their shoulders. The surfboard will follow the direction of their gaze. I love surfing not only the sunshine and the ocean, but also the ocean. I am passionate about falling and repeatedly standing up again after falling. Exploring Shenzhen SeaWorld
Shenzhen Seaworld, located in the Shekou district of Shenzhen, China, is an intriguing blend of history, culture, and modern urban life. Originally conceived as a docking area for ocean liners, Seaworld has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, evolving from a maritime-themed park into a vibrant lifestyle and entertainment destination. This evolution reflects the broader trajectory of Shenzhen itself, a city that has rapidly developed from a small fishing village into a bustling metropolis.
The origins of Shenzhen Seaworld date back to the late 20th century, during a time when Shenzhen was emerging as China’s first Special Economic Zone. The centerpiece of Seaworld is the "Minghua," a retired French ocean liner originally named the “An Yue Jiang.” After being decommissioned in the 1980s, the ship was permanently docked in Shekou and repurposed as a floating hotel and entertainment complex. This ship, now surrounded by a large plaza and a man-made lake, serves as a poignant reminder of Shenzhen’s maritime history and its role as a gateway for international exchange.

🇨🇳 Wutong Mountain Hike via Xiutong Road
Wutong Mountain, the tallest peak in Shenzhen, stands at 944 meters. It offers multiple trails of varying difficulty, and I chose to hike via Xiutong Road, known as the fastest route to the summit. Completed in September 2007, Xiutong Road is one of the most scenic trails in the Wutong Mountain Scenic Area, offering breathtaking views of the sea and sky. The trail starts behind Shenzhen Foreign Languages School High School and connects with Bitong Road, eventually leading to the Wutong Mountain summit. I took a taxi to the trail entrance and hiked for about 2.6 kilometers, reaching the Big Wutong summit in just over 2 hours. Xiutong Road itself is 2,146 meters long and climbs to an elevation of approximately 900 meters, with the final stretch to the summit completed via Bitong Road.
