Shenyang Middle Street, located on Zhongjie Road in Shenhe District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, is the first commercial pedestrian street in China and is known as the 'First Street of the Northeast'. The Shenyang Middle Street commercial district is composed of Zhongjie Road, Xiaodong Road, and Xiaoxi Road, with a total length of 1900 meters, of which Zhongjie is 579.3 meters long and 11.7 meters wide. Originally named Siping Street, it was established in 1625 and has a history of 400 years. There were originally a bell tower and a drum tower built on the east and west sides. Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, the horse market trade in Liaodong Kaiyuan, Guangning, and Fushun was prosperous, which led to significant development of the commodity economy in Shenyang, located at the center of the three major horse markets. In 1625, when 'Da Jin' (later known as the Qing Dynasty) moved its capital to Shenyang, the economy flourished even more. The brick city built by the Ming Dynasty was renovated and expanded, and according to the historical Chinese concept of 'left to ancestors, right to altars, facing the market behind', the original 'cross' shaped two streets were changed into a 'well' shaped four streets: today's Shenyang Road, Zhongjie Road, Chaoyang Street, and Zhengyang Street. In 1997, Zhongjie was officially transformed into a commercial pedestrian street. On September 25, 2020, Shenyang Middle Street, with nearly 400 years of history, was upgraded after renovation and presented a brand new look to tourists and citizens.
