Shaoxing | The Largest Calligraphy Museum in China

The Lanting Calligraphy Museum in Shaoxing is currently the largest calligraphy-themed museum in China. It is also the first museum themed around the 'Preface to the Orchid Pavilion,' comprehensively and systematically reflecting Lanting calligraphy and culture. The museum mainly exhibits the masterpieces of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, known as the 'Two Wangs,' as well as works by famous calligraphers influenced by them throughout history. It features exhibition halls for Wang Xizhi's masterpieces, his life stories, historical calligraphy imitations, famous works, a calligraphy exchange center, and a calligraphy experience area. From the Lanting Scenic Area to the Lanting Calligraphy Museum, there is a sense of transitioning from the Jin Dynasty to the modern era. The museum has two floors; the first floor displays ceramics and inkstones, all collected by Mr. Chen Yiyao from both domestic and international sources. The second floor is generally used for various art exhibitions. Upon entering, one is immediately struck by a prominent 'zhi' character, which is Wang Xizhi's 'zhi.' 'Zhi' is both part of Wang Xizhi's name and one of the 21 'zhi' characters in the 'Preface to the Orchid Pavilion.'
