Green tea, a specialty from Shangrao

Shangrao, historically known as Xinzhou and Guangxin, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi Province, located in the northeastern part of the province. It borders Zhejiang Province to the east, Fujian Province and Yingtang City of Jiangxi Province to the south, Fuzhou City, Nanchang City, and Jiujiang City to the west, and Jingdezhen City and Huangshan City of Anhui Province to the north. Shangrao serves as a regional central city, a Type II large city, and a third-tier city in Jiangxi Province, covering a total area of 22,737 square kilometers. The name Shangrao is said to originate from the phrase 'a place of superior richness.' Historically, it was part of the Wu region. In the 15th year of Jian'an during the Eastern Han Dynasty (210 AD), Poyang County was established. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the territory of today's Shangrao City was long divided between Raozhou and Xinzhou (renamed Guangxin during the Yuan Dynasty); Wuyuan County belonged to Huizhou. In 1949, the Shangrao Special District was established. In 2000, it was renamed Shangrao City. Shangrao is one of the birthplaces of Taoism; it is the hometown of Zhu Xi, Zhan Tianyou, Fang Zhimin, and Xin Qiji also lived here for a long time. Shangrao has a fine revolutionary tradition, having established the revolutionary base in northeastern Jiangxi. The city boasts rich tourism resources, including the Sanqing Mountain Scenic Area, Guifeng Scenic Area, and Jiangwan Scenic Area, which are three national AAAAA-level tourist attractions; Sanqing Mountain, China Danxia, and Wuyi Mountain are three World Heritage Sites. Wuyuan County in Shangrao City has been recognized as a national demonstration area for all-region tourism.
