The beauty of the architectural framing of 'Green Hills'

On the north bank of the Pujiang River, on the west side of the Yangpu Bridge, there is such a peculiar building with an alternative shape and smooth lines. It is the Yangpu Riverside Landscape---Green Hills. The predecessor of Green Hills was a riverside warehouse of the Shanghai Tobacco Company, originally included in the demolition plan. However, in the context of revitalizing industrial buildings and reducing development, combined with the innovative transformation of the Pujiang Riverside Avenue in recent years, after inspections by urban planning and municipal construction departments, it was decided, after much deliberation, to preserve and innovate the warehouse. It has become an urban riverside complex that integrates municipal infrastructure, public green space, and public services, and a riverside landscape for citizens to relax and sightsee. Originally, Green Hills was a rectangular six-story industrial warehouse. After the meticulous design by the Tongji Original Design Studio, a rigid industrial building was transformed into a magnificent work of art, which is truly admirable for the designers' ingenuity. Green Hills stretches north to south along the Huangpu River bank, and from an aerial view, it looks like a green giant wheel that is about to be launched and sail far away. To reduce the oppressive feeling that the warehouse gave to the riverside skyline, the designers gradually reduced the building from the middle. This has resulted in what we see today: the first floor as office space, the second floor as exhibition space, the third floor as corridor space, the fifth floor as a steel-structured circular gallery, and the atrium designed with a soaring double helix staircase, with the beauty of its lines leaping to the eye. Interestingly, because Green Hills was formerly the Shanghai Tobacco Company, the design did not forget to leave a place for the old employer: on the north side of Green Hills, under the green slope, a broken cigarette is specially designed, constantly reminding people, for the sake of health, please do not smoke!
