Panlong Ancient Town belongs to Xujing Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai, and is located on the west side of Panlongtang (also known as Panlong Port). Panlong Port was one of the five major ports of the Wusong River in ancient times. It is winding and there is a saying that "there are eighteen bends of Panlong, and you can see Panlong at every bend." The earliest historical records of Panlong can be traced back to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and it has gone through thousands of years of rise and fall to the present day. Legend has it that in ancient times, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang was trapped here due to war and rushed out of the city with two swords in his hands, so the village was named Panlong Village. Panlong Town once had more than 40 rice mills, rice shops and rice stalls, and more than 100 rice ships were often docked there. It was one of the main towns for transporting grain to downtown Shanghai. The rebuilt ancient town retains historical buildings such as Xianghua Bridge, Fenglai Bridge, Panlong Temple, Cheng Family Ancestral Hall, Catholic Church, Xuezhuxuan, and Gaoyin Reading Hall. Panlong Temple has a long history with flying eaves, brackets, and yellow walls. It is commonly known as the "ancient temple" or "holy hall" locally. According to historical records, Panlong Temple was formerly the "Pumenjiao Temple", which was later merged with the holy hall. Panlong Ancient Town has given birth to ten bridges, namely Helong Bridge, Conglong Bridge, Huilong Bridge, Hulong Bridge, Kualong Bridge, Baolong Bridge, Panlong Bridge, Huilong Bridge, Xinglong Bridge and Fenglai Bridge, which are known as the Nine Dragons and One Phoenix, outlining the culture of small bridges and flowing water in the south of the Yangtze River.
