Hushan Park: Once a gathering place for Jewish refugees

Hushan Park, located at No. 118 Hushan Road, Hongkou District, Shanghai, was established in 1917 and opened to the public in 1918. It was originally named Stadley Park. In June 1944, it was renamed Hushan Park. From the 1930s to the early 1940s (during World War II), a large number of Jewish refugees came to Shanghai for refuge, and Hushan Park became a gathering place for Jewish refugees. Today, the park still retains the Jewish refugee shelter of that year (Figure 6, now converted into a park mother and baby room). On the front wall of the building, there is a plaque (Figure 7) with Chinese and English inscriptions: To thank the Shanghai people for their shelter of Jewish refugees before and during World War II, with the support of the Hongkou District People's Government, the Israeli government and Israeli companies have specially funded the renovation of this building for commemoration. In 1994, the Hongkou District People's Government built a new monument in the park to explain the Jewish refugee residential area (Figure 4) to record history and for tourists to admire. Although Hushan Park is not large, it attracts special attention because of this unforgettable history. Hushan Park
