Shanghai’s “Hanging Gardens of Babylon”!

Shanghai’s architectural landscape never fails to impress. My latest city walk discovery is 1000 Trees (天安千树) in Putuo district. Designed by renowned British architect Thomas Heatherwick’s firm, this mixed development of shopping mall, restaurants and exhibition space was completed in 2021. Nestled in a residential enclave along Suzhou Creek, the imposing structure is eye catching and adds a touch of artistry to the peaceful community. Inside the mall, a Christmassy mood continues into January as classic Christmas songs play and a gigantic Christmas tree takes center stage. Several coffee joints complement the laid back atmosphere of a Sunday afternoon. Those looking for a treat can head to the Tokyo-based Michelin starred kaiseki restaurant, Narisawa, which has landed an outlet in 1000 Trees. A walk along Suzhou creek adjacent to the mall reveals some interesting art installations on the exterior of the mall.
