Sham Shui Po Centennial Heritage Site - Free Guided Tour

My girlfriend and I have successfully signed up for the guided tour of the former Sham Shui Po Water Service Reservoir organized by the Water Supplies Department. We can visit the interior and exterior design and architectural structure of the water service reservoir and appreciate this century-old building in person. The former Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir was the first circular underground service reservoir in Hong Kong. It was completed in 1904 before the First World War. This Roman-style underground reservoir has a history of more than 100 years and is a Grade I historic building. It has a diameter of 150 feet (about 46 meters) and a height of 22 feet 5 inches (about 6.85 meters) from the reservoir ground to the arch. It has a capacity of about 2 million gallons (about 9,900 cubic meters). The ceiling of the water service reservoir is made of concrete to achieve the designed span. The weight of the concrete ceiling and the weight of the soil are transmitted to the granite slab bases on both sides of the vault, and the imitation Roman semicircular vault made of red bricks, and then to the rectangular stone columns made of carved granite stacked in layers, so that the overall structure can safely transfer the weight from top to bottom to the concrete foundation. 108 pillars made of rough granite, the semicircular vault made of red bricks, the pentagonal granite pads, the concrete ceiling, different colors and simple lines, form the unique color and style of this water service reservoir. The entire water distribution reservoir has been reinforced and renovated, with lighting, ventilation and fire-fighting equipment installed, elevated platform access, and greening of the water distribution reservoir cover.
